Plymouthy Adams Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 these new car commercials with the "new" push to start button...like bore me to tears some more please.. Quote
Johnny S Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 Maybe "people" equate that with the Staples EASY button! I'm not impressed either. What will they think of next ..... cars that drive themselves? Oh ya ... that too has been on my mind of late. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 The brother in law's car has a push to start button, but it's a Prius, so it's electric as well as gas. I call it his "stealth" since they run so quiet. Quote
Edward Roberts Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 I read that one of the cool new innovations in the 2011 Mustang is a speedometer light that changes colors. Everyone together: "Ooooh, ahhhhh!" Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 14, 2010 Author Report Posted October 14, 2010 and next I expect the tape speedo will be re-introduced..duh..throw me back to the 61 Plymouth and my currently owned Austin America's Quote
tysouthwick Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 I saw a ford commercial and the car can parallel park its self! Quote
faucet47custom Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 I've been in one of the Lexus LS460's that parked itself. It is a very weird feeling to let go of the steering wheel and watch it go. I want to figure out how to make one of those keyless systems work with my original push button on my dodge. Quote

Don Coatney Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 Please pardon me but I dont watch very much TV that has commercials. So enlighten me what is this push to start thing. Quote
greg g Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 You have a remote in your pocket that the car regognizes, and lets you be tracked where ever you go through RIDF (radio IDentification Frequency) Kind like the Mobile EZ stick. But much more big brother is watching implications. Your smart car recognizes that you or your agent (voluntary or not) are approaching the vehicle and unlocks the doors, and allows you to start the car by just pushing a botton on the dash rather than inserting and turning that pesky key. But the Ridf can be read passively by other recievers and track your whereabouts whether you want it to or not. The more I read about these things, the more I tend to want to be techologicaly ignorant. No one star, no cell phone with a GPS chip, no frequent customer reward tags(many have RIDf chips imbedded) no credit card or debit card transactions, thruway expass, etc. Not that I care if big brother knows I had a fahita at chilis at 1:30 today but there are other things that can be done with that stuff that truely infringes on privacy, and once you become reduced to data in a computer there ain't nothing you can do to change the data, and because it's in a computer, the powers that be believe the data is truth. PatS.... Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 I think after they get all the bugs ironed out of the revolutionary pushbutton start system, they MIGHT begin research on the futuristic floor pedal start system. That would be the pinnacle of modern technology, but won't happen overnight. The only thing left would the impossible...the outside crank start...but that is decades away. Quote
TodFitch Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 Please pardon me but I dont watch very much TV that has commercials. So enlighten me what is this push to start thing. A number of newer cars have a push button on the dash that turns the engine on and off. The one on my 2004 Prius has the same sort of on/off switch icon on it as is seen on many of the newer computers. You push the button to start the car. And then push it again to shut it down. If you have the "keyless" entry system it works out pretty well. The key (a RFID device) stays in your pocket, you walk up to the car and place you hand on the door handle. The car detects the key as being in a reasonable distance of the door and senses a hand on the handle and unlocks itself. You get in and press the start/power button. Again the car senses the key is in the car so it starts the engine. On stopping, press the power button to shut down the car. Get out, close the door, and press a little button on the door handle to lock the car. You never need to remove the key from your pocket so your hands are free to juggle grocery bags or whatever. Flatie46 Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 If they want to re-invent something really cool and really simple, how about the vent window. The people that design cars have been outta touch with the common public for years. When I pass a new car dealer I rarely even give a glance. I'm afraid I'll dose off and hit something or someone. Frank Elder Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 How about the passion coupe the smart car puts out with a polycarbonate see through roof.........50's crown vic had that in green glass didn't it? Quote
Young Ed Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 How about the passion coupe the smart car puts out with a polycarbonate see through roof.........50's crown vic had that in green glass didn't it? That started in 54 with the skyliner and the sunvalley. They had plexiglass in the roof. Even had a zipper piece in the headliner to close it off it you wanted. Quote

Amen to that! We enjoy showing our youngsters (who have never seen a vent window) how effective they are at defrosting a window (down South, anyway). My parents had a '71 Maverick when I was young. The family went to Disney World in it. With no A/C and two stinking boys sharing the backseat we kept all windows, including the rear vent windows, open. My dad smoked back in the day before car seats and cancer. One of my few memories from that trip was having his lit butts flick out the front window only to get sucked back into the rear vent window and hit me right behind the ear. Quote
John Mulders Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 reminds me of my son who sat down in a rental in Holland (he was 4 or so , so 17 years ago) and that car had manual roll down windows. He was used to the Subaru which had electric. He was excited when asking " heee , is that something new?" Also the time when we showed an LP and explained there were two sides with music, totally different concept compared to CD's they were familiar with ! John Quote
