Reg Evans Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Some times while driving my 35 Dodge on a bumpy road The front wheels will start wobbling real bad. It seems to have gotten worse lately. With the wheels off the ground I have detected slightly worn king pins if I grab the bottom of the wheel and lift outward. The ball joints and drag link seem tight and when I grab one wheel and turn the wheels I only see a little slop at the steering box. Could the king pin wear be causing this wobble? The car has fairly new bias ply tires on it. Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Hi Reg, I have been told by some old time mechanics, that loose king pins, will sometimes, let the front wheels wobble, when going over bumps, railway tracks, etc. ......fred Quote
james49ply Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 with the wheels streight there should be no play in the gearbox. any play , gearbox, tierod ends, kinpins, etc can cause wobble and on a rough road this would be very noticable. try adjusting the gearbox first, may cure the problem. aero3113 Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Reg, on your car is there any steering box insulators? If yes do they need to be replaced? I replaced mine on my 50 Plymouth and noticed a huge difference. Before After Quote
Reg Evans Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 Steering box insulators? I don't know if the 35 has them but I'll have a look. I did adjust the steering box a little but haven't taken it on a test drive yet. Guess I'd better replace the king pins too. Thanks guys. Quote
