what do you guys think a fair price would be for a ring and pinion gear from a 4.3 rear end that are in "near perfect condition"? Would it be smart to get all the internals or are those two enough?

thanks

If it is possible to get the good gears assembled with the housing, that would be my first choice. Having the assembly, it would easier to swap rear assemblies than to swap only the gears if the new assembly insides are OK. If the insides of the new assembly have problems, then its a toss up which would be better. Unless you are in the mountains or just want the 4.3 gears for acceleration, I wonder why you would consider that ratio. I have that ratio with an overdrive and am thinking of going to 3.9 ratio. As to the value of good used gears, a guess is $50 to $100. From time to time on craigslist.com I see old Plymouth parts for less because someone just wants to get rid of them.

I'm at the 4.3 because I am trying to do a full resto of the truck, and yes, that means 45MPH might be top end.

I have a 4.375 in my 1933 and I find that for long distances on the freeway 58 MPH (by the GPS) is fine. The engine could probably do a bit more (my calculation say 62 MPH or so). But the suspension, steering and brakes become pretty scary when you are running faster than that what with the skinny bias ply tires, lever action shocks, etc.
