That is good news...with practice, you can partially dismantle & clean that carb every year with only a screwdriver, needle nose pliers, a couple of clean shop towels and a can of carb cleaner, and it'll take less than an hour. Ya know you've gotten good at it when you can perform this task on the side of the road while wearing your Sunday best and only need to wash your hands afterwards.

Dismantle and clean a carburetor every year? Why would I do that?

I guess I am about 12 years behind on that task. If it ain't broke then why should I "fix" it? (Famous last words for a person heading out for about a 500 mile trip in the old car next Sunday.)

Good point Tod. There is a fine line between Preventive Maintanence and "if it ain't broke...". Its hard sometimes to appreciate performance drop over a long period, and the simple task of replacing tired spark plugs always reminds me of this. "...hey, it has more pep..." lol...

Dont forget to post a thread on that 500 mile trip, sounds epic. :D

Great news.

Did you ever check the oil to make sure it hasn't thinned out due to fuel in it. My oil was a mess when I drained it. Practically looked like black gasoline.

Dan, I have not forgotten your advice. The oil doesn't seem thin to the touch but it is black enough to think a change is warranted.
