greg g Posted May 21, 2010 Report Posted May 21, 2010 My daughter has a car that is registered in Florida, and insured there also. She will not be returning to Fla as she just (thank you dear INSERT DIETY HERE) got a full time job in health care here. The registration and insurance are good till the end of May and will not be renewed as we just sold the car. (I'gonna miss it as I bought it new in 94) In NY if your insurance lapses on registered vehicle, your liscence gets revoked in addition to fines and surcharges and other mean and spite full stuff. So in order to cancel a policy you must turn in your plates get a reciept and render the reciept to the insurance carrier whereby they will cancel the ploicy. And notify DMV the car is off the road. I have looked at the Florida DMV sites and it seems they are pretty casual about the situation, but ignorance is not a defense and I don't want her to get any nasty communiques from FLDMV down the road. Can any of our Florida folks help a sista out regarding this. If she needs to mail in the plates she needs to do it before she gets another bill from her ins company. Quote
Captain Neon Posted May 21, 2010 Report Posted May 21, 2010 While having never lived in Florida, I have licenced cars in five states (wife came from NY). Except for New York, I have always been able to keep the plates, and even were I to try and give them back I probably would have had an argument on my hands. The only times that I have ever been asked for proof of insurance has been when renewing, and when questioned by a licenced uniformed peace officer. It is my understanding that only New York has such draconian insurance and licencing requirements, but I will allow for our Florida brethren to interject. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Another thought, Greg.......re the insurance aspect. I would advise notifying the company (if you haven't done so already) that she has moved and request cancellation of the policy. If any time remaining, should be a credit to you. Or, if the company will transfer the policy from state to state, do that. If no one there responds to your plea for assistance on the license part.....I would spend my dime and call the good ole DMV. Get the facts straight from one end of the horse. Which end will remain to be determined. Quote
PatS.... Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 "Which end will remain to be determined. :D" I have a feeling the DMV reputation is the same no matter where you are! Here, they are actually privatized and run by individual entrepreneurs, much like the local corner grocery store...in ALL respects. But, just like when it was government employees, you can ask 5 different clerks the same question and get 7 different answers Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Well Greg, I cancelled my insurance on 2 vehicles that I sold 1 1/2 years ago and I didn't have to return my plates. I've never heard anything here in Florida about returning plates. Tom Quote
