47chrysler Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 first off I really want to thank you all for your respounce to my last enquire. It sure did help with the ulpolstery. I get the car back next week and am planning on pulling the motor for a rebuild. The manuel said I would have to pull the radiator with the front fenders as a hole. sury I read that wrong! I know I need to pull the hood but Front Fenders too?!? also I am looking at getting the 4 barrel manifold from stovebolt and then putting the 3-97's with adapter from speedway on it? To much carbs or any other suggestions? where do I go to get spec for a build up of my 250? Quote
builtfercomfort Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Speaking from 39 Chrysler experience... 47 probably similar: The easiest way of getting at the motor is to drain the water from the radiator, unbolt the fenders from the body, and take off the whole front clip at once - including grill. As I recall it's only 12-16 bolts total. The front panel, grill, fenders all come off at once, letting you get at the motor area easily. I think you have to pull the bumper too, 4 big bolts? Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 If the trans is removed, you should be able to pull the engine out of the car with front clip intact. The top rad brace may need to be removed , to allow the engine to move upward and out. The trouble with removing the entire front clip, is it is not always easy to get aligned again, plus removing it almost inevitably will scratch something. The plus of removing it is, you can really clean up the firewall and re-paint it, and the front frame area too. I may at some point need to pull my engine, having the pleasure of aligning my front fenders, hood to cowl, then doing filler work and paint, not crazy about disturbing any of it, if I could avoid it............Fred Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Easiest way is to remove the front clip, if you are into doing things the hard way get a tilt attachment for your cherry picker.....steep angle. Remove the floor pan panel also it just makes things easier. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Pull the radiator and trans only-leave the front clip on. If you don't mind leaving the old dirty bell housing in the car-just unbolt the crank from the fluid drive coupling -8 nuts and unbolt the engine from the bell housing-even easier! Of course you need to remove the removable front floor pan 1st. You also will need a tilt bar to make it easier to make the front pulley clear the rad core support. Bob Quote

For sure is easier to pull front clip, but it can be done without removal of the clip. The trans need to come off, what about the top rad brace, should it be removed? I know if I had to pull my engine, would be looking to do it with the clip still on car, do you think it could be done, with a cherry picker style engine hoist........ Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Use a torch.....lol, Forgot to mention the brace, that can go with the front clip, or separate. I pulled the clip on my first desoto and just the hood and brace on the dodge. I'm guessing with you chryco you would do the same, also if you leave the front on and try to pull with the tranny S/M comes to mind! Quote
PatS.... Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) I like to pull the front clip (fenders, grille in one piece). It gives you a chance to work easier without leaning over the fenders. It gives easy access to everything, it gives the opportunity to easily clean away a half century of caked on crud and pressure wash the exposed chassis. (maybe paint it as well?) You can also stand the front clip up and pressure wash the underside of it as well and maybe add some fresh paint there too. It's a great time to rebuild the front steering and suspension if it needs it. If the engine needs to come out again after that OR you don't feel like doing the other jobs as well, you can pull the engine easily without pulling the front clip. If you leave the trans bolted up, you'll need a mechanism for your engine hoist that will tilt the engine at a very steep angle. http://www.princessauto.com/shop-garage/repair-equipment/shopcrnes/engnestandacc/1580009-engine-leveller?keyword=engine+leveller Edited February 27, 2010 by PatS.... Frank Elder Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 roger that! Where is that other project at Pat? Quote
PatS.... Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 I was speaking of my severely delayed 49 Chrysler. I pulled the front clip to replace the engine, do the brakes and suspension and some other work best done without the clip. Hopefully I'll get some progress this year. Before After Long way to go but will get there. Quote
randroid Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Folks, When I changed-out my engine I pulled the front clip by removing all the bolts, sliding a cold case of beer under the old engine while it was still in the car, and inviting a couple of friends over to help me find the beer. One of the friends drove his backhoe to the house so I doubt any of use ever had to exert much effort other than tying chains to the clip. Tied the same chains to the engine once it was clean and the installation was the same except in reverse order. Spend $30,000 on a backhoe of your own and this can be a really fun job but other than that you're on your own. -Randy Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 As said earlier, motor with or without transmission can be removed/installed with front clip in place. REmove radiator and horns along with hood for best results. Use of the tilting device shown by Pat is recommended. Quote
