Wife To Emergency At Hospital YesterdayOT

Hi all, you never know when something tragic could happen.

For a few days my Wife (40 YO) ,was complaining about breathing difficulty, she is a smoker, so she made an appt for the Doc, but had to wait a week, so nothing more said.

I am at work yesterday, had a Federal Inmate with me at the Mother Pen next door from my pen, I get a call, my Wife is going by Ambulance to the Hospital in Winnipeg.

I get back my work site, get my Van going and head on down the highway back into the city, and to the particular Hospital, whcih was the furthest from my work.

I get a call on my cell phone, from the Paramadeic, he says my Wife is doing okay, but they will go to the Hospital for her to have an EKG and X ray, and to be seen by an MD.

I get to the Hosptial, the St. Boniface Hosptial, 1 of the 2 biggest hospitals in Winnipeg, there are 6 Hospitals in Winnipeg.

This palce is jammed packed like a busy mall or airport, it is a big place, my Wife was doing fine, she underwent another more detailed EKG, X Ray, Doctors exam, this took 7 hours. There was nothing physically wrong, they figure it was either panic related anxiety, work stress, or something, she was then released, and is now home resting for a few days.

Man a day like that can create stress and worry, but thankfully She and everyone else is alright. Oh BTW, my parking tab was $13.00 for 7 hours, not the cheapest place to park

Thanx Dezeldoc, yes smoking can create a lot of problems, she is one of the few smokers from either family side, here maternal Grandfather died of Lung Cancer from smoking for years........Fred

Fred,

I got a call similar to that three years ago and it still bugs me. I set a land speed record driving the twenty-five miles between us (didn't get caught) and things just kept snowballing for several months. Everything is fine today.

Dezeldoc is correct about smoking but it seems as though the medical experts giving advice on how to quit are those who've never smoked, and it's always been difficult for me to listen to them without being slightly cynical. Lynn and I both quit smoking last November and yes, we still want to smoke and no, we haven't been fudging, but there's one aspect of quitting that was never addressed by these 'experts':

Beer tastes so much better that the increase in flavor alone is worth whatever discomfort possibly experienced. The down-side of using this therapy is that my intake of beer has increased somewhat, but if your wife enjoys a frosty mug that might be an enticement for her.

Just an idea.

Glad that she is doing okay now. I concur with dezeldoc about stopping smoking and to follow up with the doctors.

But to take this thread off topic even more, this caught my eye:

I'm paying nearly $1000/mo in medical insurance just for my wife and myself. Up about 10% from last year. I guess there is still inflation in the medical field despite work, wages and everything else being down. And if something similar happened to us I know we'd have at least several hundred dollars in "co-pays".

And all you to worry about financially was $13 for parking?

Tod not complaining, just making light of it( the $13 for parking), although we have medicare in this country, it reflects quite well on my income tax, and many other taxes in this country, not complaing about this either, just the way it is, and I am okay with it....Fred thanx for all of your concern

Hey Randy, I did not waste anytime getting to the Hosptial either, but there had been some very light snow falling, so the Freeway wasa bit slcik, lots of Tractor/Trailer rigs flying by, so drovea prudent 62 MPH....Fred

I am glad your wife is doing fine. As a smoker, I have tried to quit numerous times, it ain't easy.

Bob[/quote']

How True Bob, she is not been able to quit to date, has tried a few times, gets her very edgy, and not feeling well. And for me, I can smoke the odd cig, cigar, without getting to bea regualr smoker of either, just the odd 1 here and there, a lot of my extended family members are like that.........

My mother in law smoked for 50 or more years and that woman could not go 10 minutes without a smoke! her husband was in the hospital 15 minutes away and we would drive her and she would be climbing the walls wanting to smoke but i don't let people smoke in my cars so i had to pull over so she could have a smoke! long story short about 3 years after the husband died she was having some health problems and the doc said you got to quit, she went down stairs and smoked one last cig and threw the rest of the pac in the trash and has not had one since, and it has been 5+ years!! i never thought it possible but the ol' woman proved me wrong! 87 years old this year and still going strong!

I thought that this particular topic was esp. taboo on this forum. Just an observation. I will say no more as I don't want to stand in the corner.

Fred make sure she gets in for a good work up. There was a story on last night's news about the increase of heart attacks and strokes in women. Most of whom were either ignoring their symptoms, or having them treated as anxiety attacks.

Like in men, the most common heart attack symptom for women is pain or discomfort in the chest. However, women can also have a heart attack without having any chest pain. Some of the other symptoms women might experience include:

Feeling out of breath

Pain that runs along the neck, jaw, or upper back

Nausea, vomiting or indigestion

Unexplained sweating

Sudden or overwhelming fatigue

Dizziness

My heart attack in 01 was a pain free deal for me, I got sweaty, light headed and dizzy, and a tightening in my chest but no real pain.

So please have her take this seriously, and get a good cardiac workup.

Thanx Greg, excellent advice and reccomendations. At the St Boniface Hospital, which is a renowned cardiology facility, the ruled out heart attack and stroke via ekg, blood tests, and X rays. But make no mistake, my Wife is seeing her own Physician later this week.....Thanx for your concern

I am just thankful that she is better. I too am a smoker that has "quit" more times than I can count. Like others have said make sure she gets a good workup. Best case waste of time but each of you will be happier in the end. When all gets finished take a nice long ride in your baby with her and celebrate being happy and healthy.

I had a friend that had just gone through the full stress test and all and everything was good, and 3 months later had a heart attack and a quadruple bypass. doc said no way it built up that fast and the guy doing the test must have missed something. he is lucky to be alive today.

Fred, sorry to hear about your wife's health problems but glad that things are being sorted out. Take the advice of many and follow up with her doctor about other possible causes. She really needs to quit smoking. My dad is a retired internal specialist and he says that lung cancer is a very nasty way to go. The younger you can quit the better.

Thanx Rob, she will be seeing her own Doctor, this week yet, and hopefully they will get to the bottom of this. So far it looks like a panic/anxiety attack, but who knows for sure, without tests. The hospital ruled out heart attack/stroke, her lungs were clear, we shall see soon...............Fred

Fred,

You and your wife may already know this, but there are medications that can help you quit smoking. I know people who have used them and they are effective. I used one myself when I was trying to quit. The doctor prescribed Wellbutrin, which ruins the smoking experience. It's a strange thing. Suddenly smoking seems bland and even kind of nasty. The trick is you have to WANT to quit. I didn't really want it bad enough and so I stopped taking the medication (it was ruining my smoking!). Finally, I just quit on my own. It was hard and I'm glad it's behind me. But there are other medications out there besides Wellbutrin.

Fred,

Please encourage her in whatever way you can to quit smoking! My brother-in-law was a heavy smoker, and succumbed to lung cancer about a year ago. He was in his early 50's when he passed. It's a horrible, agonizing way to die.

Smoking is bad anyway you look at it, health, costs, smell, etc.

You know that cigs up in this part of Canada are $11.00 for a 25 cigarette pack, isn't that expensive.

So you see in Canada gas is more expensve, booze i sa lot more expensive, tobacco products are more expensive, income tax is fairly high, so the med costs get met one way or the other.......Fred
