my 58 plymouth 230 flathead has a new problem. Sometimes when I first start up the engine it will run and idle fine, then sometimes,it will start idling poorly. It will run and nearly stall. The engine will idle really slowly. It doesnt do this all the time, but once warmed up it will run great. What can be causing this problem and how do i solve it?

Also check your exhaust manifold heat riser for proper functioning. Often times these become stuck in the open position thus not allowing carburetor heat. It would be especially noticeable (poor idle and stalling) when it is cold or damp. The valve should should open when you step on the accelerator.

Can you post some photos of your '58?

Check the bottom of the carb when it connects to the manifold. If there is icing looks to be white then the Heat riser is not working and the gas is a very cold vapor and causing the carb to ice over and this is causing the car to stall out. When the car is warmed up more the icing stops and the car run fine at ide.

You can pullthe choke or thtottle out when you come to a stop or keep it our unitl the engine is warmed then push in back in and the car should run fine.

I had this very same problem on my 39 Desotoand when the heat riser was fixed then the issue went away.
