flattiefreak Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 my 58 plymouth 230 flathead has a new problem. Sometimes when I first start up the engine it will run and idle fine, then sometimes,it will start idling poorly. It will run and nearly stall. The engine will idle really slowly. It doesnt do this all the time, but once warmed up it will run great. What can be causing this problem and how do i solve it? Quote
dparksie Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I would start with checking the choke/butterfly. If that is not it check the float. either way the problem is in hte carb. Don P Quote
Greenbomb Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Vacuum leak? Maybe at the carb base- need to tighten the carb bolts/nuts? Flo Quote
John Reddie Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Also check your exhaust manifold heat riser for proper functioning. Often times these become stuck in the open position thus not allowing carburetor heat. It would be especially noticeable (poor idle and stalling) when it is cold or damp. The valve should should open when you step on the accelerator. Can you post some photos of your '58? John R Quote
PatS.... Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I have these he posted some time ago: Quote
desoto1939 Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Check the bottom of the carb when it connects to the manifold. If there is icing looks to be white then the Heat riser is not working and the gas is a very cold vapor and causing the carb to ice over and this is causing the car to stall out. When the car is warmed up more the icing stops and the car run fine at ide. You can pullthe choke or thtottle out when you come to a stop or keep it our unitl the engine is warmed then push in back in and the car should run fine. I had this very same problem on my 39 Desotoand when the heat riser was fixed then the issue went away. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
John Reddie Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Thanks Pat for posting those photos. I love those '57 and '58 finned Plymouths. John R Quote
flattiefreak Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 Hello everyone, All of the nuts and bolts are tight and the heat riser works. It is probably the automatic choke needing adjustment. I will check it tomorrow and let you all know something. Quote
flattiefreak Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 it turned out to be the choke was set a little to lean so i adjusted it a little and runs perfectly. Quote
