Merle Coggins Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 While cleaning my cab and prepping it for paint, I began to realize that the hole in the floor, that the filler pipe passes through, is a rather large square hole. The hole in the side is a round hole. I have a new grommet for the side, but what seals the pipe where it passes through the floor. Apparently this was missing in my truck. Is there some kind of boot that bolts to the floor and clamps around the pipe? Or is there some other plate missing that would have a round hole and grommet? Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 The 39-47 trucks have a big thick foamlike piece that smushes between the gastank and the cab floor. Out of the 6 trucks we've owned only 1 still had that piece. Quote
Mike Meade Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 I used a piece of closed cell foam about 3/4" thick that fits between the floor and the tank,Mike. Quote
anthonyb Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 On my 52 I just used a flat piece of rubber that I cut to fit around the filler neck. That replaced what was there when I got the truck. Not sure if it was original or not. Quote
Robert Thornton Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 my 52 has flat rubber on top of floor it was that way when i got it Quote
Mario Loya B1B Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 Glad this topic came up. I got my truck with a rag and duct tape covering this space between the tube and the cab bed. Was surprising to me given the overall condition of the truck. Does anyone have any photos of what is original or what you have fabricated? Quote
Vintrader Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 I needed to use my new camera any way, how's this for a on the spot reply. I don't think anything has been touched under my seat in about 50 years. So my guess is this is what the piece looks like, or at least what's left of it? Seems to be a hard rubber about 1/8" thick. Mario Loya B1B Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 Quick reply indeed! I hope you didn't rip it out of there on my account. Thanks for sharing Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 6, 2007 Author Report Posted February 6, 2007 Thanks Dutch, Was there anything over the top to hold it down around the edges? I noticed that there are 4 screw holes at the corners. Was the rubber screwed down in the corners, or was there some kind of reinforcment around the edge with everything screwed down in the corners? Quote
anthonyb Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Merle, I just checked mine and it is the original piece that was installed when I got the truck. There are the four holes in the floor but none in the rubber seal. It fits around the tube well enough that it will stay in place without assistance. I have foil-backed insulation on the whole floor also so it shouldn't move anyway. Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Mine looks just like Dutches. There is nothing holding it in place but gravity and maybe glue originally. No holes were ever drilled like yours Merle. It seems like a small metal strip around the perimeter would be a good idea though to keep the wind from lifting it and dust from getting in. Quote
grey beard Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Merle, Mine is still all original, and has the same stuff as pictured in this thread except that it also has some burlap material, almost like feed bag stuff, only more coarse, nicely formed around the filler tube from inside the cab where the tube enters all the way over to the center of the cab, covering the fill tube and this square piece. Somehow this stuff was never disturbed. This is the first I have looked at mine, when I read your e-mail and got curious. Therefore, I am still lerning . . . . . . Quote
H Suhling Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 My '51 B-3-B has the square rubber piece also. I was able to save and reuse it. H Suhling Quote
