55 Fargo Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 Hi all, installed the glass bowl fuel filter today, had to make up some fittings as the filter had 1/8, and I need to increase to 5/16 for the carb and fuel lines. Here is a pic of the fuel filter installed, a little further from the carb than I would like, may correct this later, for now it works.....Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 Fred everytime I've seen these they are installed right on the needle and seat. There is a different seat that has threads on both sides. Did you rebuild your carb? Do you still have the leftovers in a box somewhere? The napa kits we use come with both styles of seats Quote
claybill Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 yep i have seen them also hooked right up to the brass seat. i have a couple of them lying around, about time to hook one up. neat looking! bill Quote

T120 Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Your installation looks good Fred.It may actually give a little more flexibility to the orientation of the fuel filter, while maintainiing tightness on the fittings.I had one a while back connected directly to the carburetor and the threads were stripped on the carb body. Not by me of course.;)Something to be careful of. Just my opinion.Ralph Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Interesting. While looking for a picture of the needle and seat I described for Fred I found this http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=CRB&PartNumber=24015&Description=Accelerator+Pump+w%2fo+Spring+-+Leather never knew these were available new. Price seems decent too. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Here you go Fred. Not the best picture. Look next to the leather end of the accel pump piston Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Hi Ed, I do not think I got that fitting with this Echlin carb kit. Is the fitting in ? 1/8 on the one end to go to the filter, and what size? for the carb threads. I can go to a local bearing and bolt shop tomorrow, and try and get 1. Just trying to figure out the correct size to go into the carb threads......Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fred not sure they'd have one cause its also the seat inside it Quote

Just my opinion.Ralph Although my filter is not right next to the carb, I have flare fittings on both sides of the filter. This allows 2 things, can tighten fittings, and filter can be straight and level, the second thing, is the whole filter can be roemved easily this way too, if need be, not likely, but you never know.....Fred PS not sure if I will leave it,or get it right next to the carb, for authenticity....Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fred not sure they'd have one cause its also the seat inside it Okay, maybe I better leave it alone. I did find another fitting, not sure it was from the carb kit or if I bought it, will post a pic soon...........Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fred the needle and seat I speak of would eliminate everything you currently have between the carb and the out end of the filter. Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fred the needle and seat I speak of would eliminate everything you currently have between the carb and the out end of the filter. Is this the right fitting that joins the carb and filter... Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Picture is kinda blurry but it looks right to me. Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Picture is kinda blurry but it looks right to me. Ed, if you look inside of this, is there a small hole in the center of the fitting....Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Yup thats what the point of the needle valve goes into Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Yup thats what the point of the needle valve goes into Okay, will take apart what I did, and use thisa fitting as the needle seat assembly, and attach the fuel filter right on to it.....Thanx Ed Quote
T120 Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 ..Further to my comment Fred,I guess when I took apart the fittings on a carburetor with the filter attached,it was a number of years ago and fittings had no doubt been apart several times in the past and only a couple of threads remained that actually held things together.Something to keep in mind when dealing with vintage plumbing. 55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Here isa pic of it plumbed in right tight to the carb. As soon as I did this my carb pouring out gas, maybe the float and needle were stciking, after I put in the new seat fitting, any ideas, and yes the needle is in the right position......Fred Quote
T120 Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fibre gasket between fitting and carburetor body? I can't make it out in the photo.Ralph Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Report Posted October 3, 2009 Fibre gasket between fitting and carburetor body? I can't make it out in the photo.Ralph It's on, not sure that would make my carb overflow, any ideas anyone? Quote
T120 Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Hi Fred,I have a B&B carb kit sitting in front of me and if my eyes aren't deceiving me the depth to which the needle seats in those two fittings is slightly different. It seats a little deeper in the fitting you've just installed...Any other ideas? Jim Saraceno Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 (edited) Did you readjust the float height? I've noticed different fitting are different lengths. If you replaced a longer fitting with a shorter one, your float needs to be re adjusted. BTW.. I had installed one of those in the same place some time back and I had several people point out how dangerous it would be if the bowl started leaking onto the hot manifold. Other people said they had never had that problem but I removed it anyway. Edited October 3, 2009 by Jim Saraceno Quote

I Gotta agree with you Jim, on the potenetial dangers of these filters, thatswhy I have my metal gas filter mounted down low just off the fuel pump in line. The glass bowl filters will be fine, if they obviously never leak, but they certainly are in the right location for problems......Fred Quote
