thedahmer Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Reg, I will be your traveling buddy----let's go!! Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 OK !! I don't like to fly so I'm going in this. 5 knots top speed. No gas though. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Reg I wish I had a picture of the solar boats we built in HS for the races. The second one I helped with was a hand made pontoon type boat with a cockpit up front. We had I think 5 of those solar panels made into a spoiler and then 1 more on top of each pontoon. In each pontoon under the panel was a deep cycle battery that got charged by the panels. 24v trolling motor out back. Quote
thedahmer Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 So would it be called a road trip or a boating expedition? Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Ed, I had (4) 6 volt golf cart batteries on board to run the 24 volt 130 lb dual prop trolling motor. I could go all day without discharging the batteries because of the (4) 750 watt panels on top. The only drawback was that it would take ALL DAY to get anywhere. Very quiet though. How fast would yours go? This ones top speed was 5 MPH. Reg I wish I had a picture of the solar boats we built in HS for the races. Young Ed Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 The first one I worked on was built for speed. It was a long skinny hull maybe 15ft with two little stablizer hulls at the back. That one did about 10mph I believe. The second pontoon one probably did about 5 like yours. The construction for both was wood frame with pink styrofoam insulation attached and shaped. Then covered in fiberglass tape and resin/epoxy. The first one had a remote control device to turn the motor way back there. We had lots of trouble with that remote thing melting down. Maybe because it was inside all that insulation! Quote
D25_Steve Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Wow. That is gorgeous. And here I thought I wanted a fargo school bus! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Hey Reg here's the 2nd boat I helped on. You can see its a mix of pontoon and klingon warbird! Interesting to see myself 10 years ago.... Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 That's a really sleek looking boat Ed. You guys really did a nice job. I wonder where the boat is now? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Well when we built the third the second one minus its electrics was hoisted into the rafters and displayed up there. I'm not sure what ever happened to this one. I hope its around somewhere. Quote
