blueskies Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Spent a couple of hours swapping drivelines last night. Pulled my new modern u-joint driveline and put my old original back in. Drove the car to work this morning, and the heavy vibes are gone... Not sure if the new driveline was fab'd out of true, balanced incorrectly, or if it is a pinion angle problem. I'm going to send the new driveline back to Six States so they can check it out and make sure it is right. I still have a bunch of small vibes, I'm sure they are the wheels, and one brake drum. I didn't think the wheels were bad before I had them powder coated, but now they aren't true, and one of them is out of round a bit. Wondering if they warped when the powder coat was baked. Supposed to drive the car to Jackson Hole, WY on Friday for the annual Rendezvous Rod Run, trying to get a few things done to the car for the trip. Put in a new set of spark plugs, one heat range hotter, checked the timing. Wanted to adjust the valves, but no time for that. Still need to change the oil and check the transmission and rear end fluids... lots to do. Pete Quote
randroid Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Pete, Just out of curiosity, what prompted you to go up one heat range just before a road trip? Seems as though you'd go a step down if they needed to be changed. -Randy Quote
1940plymouth Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Pete, Good luck on your trip, take lots of pictures, PLEASE:) Thanks, Bob Quote

Went from Autolite 303 plugs to Autolite 306. The throttle response seems a bit quicker with the 306 plugs, but might be my imagination... I'm going to pull them tonight and have a look at them when I get the car home after work. Pete' date='Good luck on your trip, take lots of pictures, PLEASE:) Thanks, Bob[/quote'] I'll post pictures when I get back... Pete Quote
blueskies Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Have a good trip Pete. Glad someone has time to do something on their cars. I still haven't found the time to wash my coupe or clean the whitewalls this year. I wouldn't really call it having time for the car... LOL I got home from a five day trip to Washington DC, mowed the grass that was 8" tall, put away everything from the trip, swapped the driveline and went to bed. Putting in a 14-16 hour day at work today and tomorrow to try and catch up from being gone last week, and if I can get enough done at work and on the car, leaving Friday morning for Jackson, WY in the Plymouth. Probably won't touch the car again until August to try and get all the stuff I wanted to get done this trip finished for Speed Week. Pete Quote
RobertKB Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Safe trip and enjoy. We will all look forward to the pictures. Quote

steveplym Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Good luck on your trip Pete. I'd say there is a problem with the driveshaft. My new driveline runs great and smooth. I would doubt that the powder coating process warped your wheels, but not sure. I've had wheels powder coated before without any troubles. Quote
blueskies Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 I've had wheels powder coated before without any troubles. The wheels may have been like that before, and I just didn't notice it before they were poweder coated. The wheels are original to the car, so who knows what they have been through before my time... I hope the driveline has an obvious problem when they look it over. The vibes start to get noticeable at about 50 mph, and get worse with increased speed. I really notice it when the OD shifts from third direct to third over. Adjusting pinion angles can be like chasing your tail, so I hope it's not that. It was nice driving the car today with out the vibes... when the new driveline comes back, I'm going to try and fix my rattling e-brake drum when I install it. That noise has been driving me nuts for a couple of years now... It never ends, but I suppose that is the point of having an old car. Pete Quote
blueskies Posted June 11, 2009 Author Report Posted June 11, 2009 ...If the vibes are coming from the wheels' date=' you may really have a hard time getting rid of it....[/quote']When I can afford it, I may send the wheels to some place like Stockton Wheel and have them straightened out. Of course, it's the old domino thing... may be cheaper to buy new wheels, but then my caps won't fit. And there's no sense in replacing the out of round brake drum when one NOS drum on ebay is worth more than a complete disc brake kit. Probably will drive the car as is, vibes and all, and not lose any sleep over it. Pete Quote

Crurious if you are running stock full wheel covers? Wondering if the valve stems are in the same place as the stock wheels, to work with the little stainless stem covers in the caps. Pete Quote
Howard Tarnoff Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Recall I offered you the set from my car. I replaced them with Wheel Vintiques and the quality is excellent. If you are running radials, you can also take the opportunity to upgrade the tire size to 215 75's in that there is no upcharge for custom back spacing and you will have no issues fitting a wider wheel to accommodate the radials without tire bulge. A guy with a 50 has my stock set now. HT Quote

HT Howard- Didn't think I'd need your wheels back then... I will probably do new wheels when the cash flow improves. Until then, I'll deal with the wobbly wheels I have. Haven't seen the spread in Street Rodder yet, but congrats in the ink- Pete Quote
