Spent most of the day Sunday at the 66 Drive-In Theater, along old Rt 66

just west of Carthage, MO.

Received a phone call from some friends on Saturday night saying they

wanted a group of old cars at the drive-in at 8 a.m. Sun. To be used

as props in a segment of "The Great American Road Trip", which airs

on NBC. I think it's on Tuesday nights. The segment they filmed Sunday will be showed on July 14th.

Turned out you had to leave your car til 4 p.m. They lined them up according

to a plan they had devised......making a maze out of them....which the contestants evidently had to go thru

to accomplish some goal set forth

by the show. I say "evidently" because they would not let us stay to

watch the actual filming. Said it could be a bit hazardous with their

camera equipment rolling around.

The pictures can't really describe the maze......we had to jockey the

cars at least 3 times to finally get what they wanted.

After sitting around for a while by the concession stand, they said a

bus would take us for a free lunch at the Carthage city park....

which was a couple miles down the road.

Sure nuff.....there was this big ol nice bus waiting.

Nice catered lunch with brisket, chicken and side dishes and

beverages like lemonade and tea. The pavillion offered shade

while we killed time til 4 pm.

Or, you could go relax on the air conditioned bus and watch a movie.

Best I could tell, there are 3 families competing on the program.

They get to travel in these nice motor homes. The show is using

a Rt 66 theme. The trip began in Chicago, went to St Louis for a

segment, one at Merramec Caverns near Stanton, MO; the on to

this stop in Carthage. I asked a few staffers where their next stop

would be, and they said they were not informed til the morning.

One young man said there were approximately 120 staff persons

traveling. There were several trucks and vans of various sizes hauling

people and equipment. All the folks I visited with were very friendly....

were from all over the U.S., now living in L.A.

Will just have to wait until July 14 to see how much air time the car

gets.

They did NOT say they would do that.

Just told us when it airs.

I suppose I could tape the show, if I can remember how to work the VCR.

I need to start working on that thought......maybe I can figure it out by July.

Think all we watched the whole weekend on regular TV was one movie and the news.

Norm;

There was a Godfather marathon on TV here in my Chicago no tell motel room. I sure thought that was you playing Freto:D

I did watch parts of the Indy 500 and parts of the rained out Nascar 600. Watched a movie at the Imax theater on the Navy Pier and had lunch at Bubba Gumps shrimp house. Also did a Chicago river boat tour. It was interesting.

Still in Chicago Don? Are you driving home or flying? If you come through the southern part of Illinois let me know, I'd like to meet up with you.

I hate to fly but I did so this morning. I am back home in the Boro for a week. Are you close to Anna, IL? Good friend and forum member Gary Dalmer lives there.

Yep, I'm live about an hour north of Gary on Rt. 51. I'm not sure I've met him personally, but I know several of his fellow car friends down in that area. Clay Diggs and I saw his old yellow Chrysler coupe in Piggott, AR last weekend. Not sure what he's got now, I thought it was a '57 chevy station wagon.

I hate to fly too. Next time your up this way let me know.

We talked about you for a minute Don, as well as all the other forum members. I really enjoyed my chat with him.
