BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 One model is available at NAPA stores......around $3...... It's this model, made by Balkamp. Just posting in case anyone needs a new cap. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 Fortunately, not all ebay customers also read this forum. Quote
steveplym Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 What makes me mad is that I bought one just like that from Roberts for $7. Closest NAPA is about 30 minutes from here. That was a year ago, probably would have cost me just as much in gas to go get it though. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 Shel, are you trying to say they don't quite know what they're talking about regarding those parts??? That's what I would say. Someone said PartsAmerica was purchased by O'Reilly, if I recall correctly. All I know is, I went into a NAPA store one day in a small town about 20 miles from here.....operated by a husband and wife. They looked up the radiator cap in their book, said they didn't have it in stock and would need to order it. When I told them where I live, they graciously called the local NAPA store, gave them the part number, and asked if they would order it for me to pick up in a few days. Which they did. When I went in week before last, locally, to get another one they first offered me a different cap that cost more. I told them which one I wanted, then they found it as well. Ordered it -- it was the $2.69 one. The parts stuff can get kinda crazy, huh??? Maybe I should buy a couple more to put on ebay for $20. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 I suppose that oil filter might fit a 40s Dodge, IF you have modified it and changed to where you can use a spin-on filter. Not sure about that oil cap, though. Maybe the diameter is large enough to screw into our filler pipes. Do you suppose it's vented? Well, I guess if they give free shipping, that might make it a little better deal on radiator caps. Quote
grey beard Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Bought that Balkamp number for a non-pressurized cap. It might fit cars, but it is more than half an inch to small to fit Pilothouse radiator necks. And I really liked the price . . . . . . anybody have a good cap stretcher? Quote
dndrodshop Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 I took my radiator to a local shop and they modified the filler to allow for a pressurized cap. I could only use a 4 lb cap but some pressure is better than no pressure. There is a rule of thumb ... 1 lb of pressure increases xxx degrees before boiling. Don't remember xxx Quote
Don Jordan Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Help me - you guys got me so confused. Is the word here that a stock 218 uses a radiator cap with ZERO pounds pressure? My car has a cap with 4 lbs but I usually leave it half cocked. I've already blown a freeze plug which I thought might be the cap. My local parts store has a no pressure cap - is this the way to go? Quote
Young Ed Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Depends on the car. Pre 1951 plymouths used the 218 with no pressure systems. 51 went pressurized but still used the 218. If 4lbs is causing you issues its not because it originally had a no pressure system. Quote
