lorandunn Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 As many of you know by now, I've had a little trouble on the 12v conversion (for a number of reasons that I wont rehash). Now that I'm well on my way thanks to you kind folks, I'm ready for the alternator portion of this task. Having very little experience with Mopar (except for my old '59 back in High School), I need a little hlp with wiring in this alternator and Vreg. I got my hands on an alternator for a 69 Dart and need to know exactly how to best wire it in. The existing generator has only two wires, while this new one has 3, 2 fields and one bat. The VReg has connections for 2 wires. Anyone out there wanna help with a diagram or other tidbit of info? Quote
lorandunn Posted April 9, 2009 Author Report Posted April 9, 2009 Wait, I think I have it... Or is this type VReg for electronic ignition only? Quote
steveplym Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 That should work whether you have electronic ignition or not. Ignition is just marked positive on the diagram. If that looks like the connections you have I'd say give it a shot. Just wondering if there was any reason why you didn't go with the GM three wire alternator? I just converted mine with that alternator and it was super easy to wire up and don't have to worry about a voltage regulator. I know that each to their own and sometimes you use what parts you have, I was just wondering if you thought about the GM internal regulated alternators. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 I always use the Chrysler dual field alternator and firewall mounted regulator for my upgrades, of course you are running a couple wires to the external regulator but in times of troubleshooting..just unplug the reg, short across the two wires and if get charging you have a bad regulator..if not then go to the alternator..probably just brushes. these brushes are also replacable with the alternator mounted on the vehicle...have never replaced a alternator of this type with a bad stator or diode plate...and have only replaced two regulators in all the years they have been out..not to say they do not go bad..just unlikely...the GM one wire is a OK...rev to charge if you don't tickle it externally, have to seperate it to troubleshoot..not really fun in my book.. lorandunn Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 The main reason I went Mopar was exactly as you state. If something goes bad I can diagnose it and change out a small part rather than the whole alternator. I would hate to get stuck out somewhere with no wrenches...a VReg or other small part would be a heckuva lot easier to change out on the side of the road. Quote

The reason I went with a GM single wire is the same as your reason for going with a Mopar unit. I can buy a replacement alternator at any auto parts house for around 30 bucks. I do not have to deal with an external voltage regulator. Remove 2 bolts, one wire and roadside repairs are easy. Quote
