PatrickG Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Dual reservior M/C: I'm doing this swap on a '50 plymouth, and i figure anyone that wants disc brakes has thought about it, so I'll post up all the info i can find regarding each kit, just to have it all in one place I know there are a number of people carrying two pot master cylinders and pedal assemblies for the old mopars, (mine is a '50 Plymouth) I've heard some good stuff about the ECI kit, and i've heard that MP Brakes and MBM Brakes both carry something. I've also seen under floor kits for 31 fords that look adaptable (speedway carries one) I'm wondering if anybody knows what the pro's and cons are of each? (or maybe someone knows the pros/cons of one, someone else knows the other, etc) ive seen people recommend one or the other, but not so much discussing the price, quality, amount of chassis or bracket modifications associated with each, things like that. Any takers? Edit: I'll add in the info on the kits people know about ECI: Price: 275-300(for use w/ manual trans) Mods to car required:Bigger access hole in floorboard MP:???? MBM:???? Speedway Model T/A/'32 ford kit: Price: $120 Mods to Car:needs the bracket to be modified, pedal assembly bent, clutch pedal pivot point?? and bigger hole in floor Quote
grey beard Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Can't speak to car side of things, but no one has ever found a dual pot MS for PIlothose trucks that does not require relocating the (gulp!) steering box forward nearly one inch - not an attractive solution. Now I just said that and I'm wrong. You can always hang em' high on the firewall . . . Personally I am convinced that there really is a MS out there that would fit and would do the job. It's just that no one with the knowledge to do so has ever taken the time to dope it out. Wish they had . . . . . . Quote
Tony Cipponeri Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Patrick, I have a dual pot master cylinder, with a booster, under the floor board. I can't remember if it was from MP or MBM, but it works really well. Tony C Quote
woodscavenger Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Ran into that problem with my PH. I searched the NAPA online site for a visual pic of one that would fit. It's tough without dimensions plus then you have to worry about displacement, bore, and stroke. I finally gave up, bought a 65 Falcon dual MC, fabricated a lever attaching to my brake pedal to reverse the direction, fabbed a bracket to mount the MC to the frame under the cab and it works great. Glad I did it. Quote
greg g Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 My studebaker truck has been swapped over to disc brakes with a dual master. I haven't paid much attention to it as of yet, but I did notice that the MC caps have Chrsler pentastars on them It is mounted to what looks like a standard street rod style L shaped bracket, in aproximately the stock location. littleman Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 I used ECI kit. Running 3 1/2 yrs no problems. easy installation, only neg was I had to cut larger hole in floor pan for service access. AL Quote
greg g Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Looks like you did some mods on the brake clutch pedal pivor tod mount also. Quote
littleman Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Looks like you did some mods on the brake clutch pedal pivor tod mount also. That is ECI's new mount for the dual MC with new pedal pivot mounts. Quote
greg g Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Well, thats pretty conciderate of them. solvs a bunch of problems don't it? Quote
PatrickG Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 anybody out there use the assembly from MP or MBM? Quote
steveplym Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Wondering will the ECI kit work with the stock brakes? That is if I wanted a dual master cylinder for my stock drum brakes. Quote
littleman Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Why not, it just splits the line reservoirs between front and back, so as not to lose everything at once. Al Quote
steveplym Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 That is what I was thinking. Thanks for the info. Quote
Jeff.P_46 Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 I used a MPM universal under floor style with booster, got it from piratejack.net. They are actually part of of MBM but have better prices. Jeff Quote
Frank Elder Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 How was the fit, and function, any extra tweaking involved? Thank you Jeff:) Quote
laynrubber Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Well this is a timely posting...... I have the disc brakes mostly installed but have been avoiding the master cylinder part due to price. From ECI they want $300 U.S. for the EC 444 bracket, unsure if that comes with a master cylinder. It looks like a standard brake early Ford M/C fits the bracket, but do they really want that much $$$ for this bracket ? what else works ? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Well this is a timely posting......I have the disc brakes mostly installed but have been avoiding the master cylinder part due to price. It looks like a standard brake early Ford M/C fits the bracket, but do they really want that much $$$ for this bracket ? what else works ? I think you were looking at the wrong kit at ECI. You can buy the new bracket and MC for 46 - 48 Mopar for $275. You were probably looking at the bracket kit that also comes with new pedals assembly. Those are about $300 without the MC. Here's the link for the MC that comes with a new mounting bracket for $275. This is what you get with the EC 444. Price is the same for your car. http://ecihotrodbrakes.com/chrysler_master_assemblies.html Quote
Brendan D25 Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 $275.00 plus *$25.00 for standard= $300.00. All the 40s Mopars listed have clutches, so why don't they just say $300 for the kit? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Brendan, can't answer that one. But.......even at $300 the prices isn't bad. I have a new NAPA MC for our cars with a spot for a remote reservoir. I bought it off ebay a few years ago at a good price. However, the NAPA price is $360 and it's a single pot. So........$300 for a dual MC with bracket doesn't sound like a bad price to me. Quote
Brendan D25 Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 It's been awhile since I bought a master cyl. I have a new one sitting on the shelf from an 80 Chev van and it looks like the one in the pic you posted. I might have to contact them and see if they will sell just the bracket and what master cyl they use, it would cut the shipping cost down if I could get it this way. Quote
