steveplym Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Well after reading numerous posts on the subject and talking with several good forum members out there who had put HEI in their cars I bit the bullet and ordered it. I received it on Friday and installed it that night at a friends house. I bought new spark plug wires of course, but kept the stock plugs in. Just set out the gap to .060. With the advice of several others I set the timing to 5 degrees advance and man does she run smooth. It fires right up without hardly touching the starter button. No matter if it is cold or hot. I drove it a lot this weekend and have to say I am very satisfied. Now after posting this I may start having problems with it, but so far it has met my expectations. I just wanted to share my thoughts on it as others have shared theirs. Quote
maurice wade Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Steve, where did you purchase your HEI? MW Quote
steveplym Posted March 26, 2009 Author Report Posted March 26, 2009 From Tom Langdon at Stovebolt Engine Co. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com Quote
Andydodge Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Steve, what I found with mine is that I can literally be standing outside the car, lean in and turn the key(its been converted to 12volts and has a later key ignition) and it starts virtually straight away without me even fiddling with the choke/accelerator pedal......definately worth the money.........andyd Quote
grey beard Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Are HEI units available for six volt applications? What do 12-volt units cost? Coudn't find them on the web site listed. Quote
steveplym Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 The HEI is only available for 12 volt negative applications. For the entire distributor and the coil it is $185. That includes all the electronics, dist cap, vac advance, and coil. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/product.asp?productid=126 Quote

Have used them for 20 yrs and love them.Bill I have used petronix too Bill and agree those ignitor kits are great. I just decided why spend the $150-$200 for petronix and have to use my current distributor. I just decided to switch, but if you have 6v that may be the way to go. I know I called them and all they needed was the # off of my autolite distributor and they said they could find me a kit. Quote
daddyo23 Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Do you have a part number for the pertronix 6v+ ? They told me they didn't have one. Wayne P. Quote
steveplym Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 Do you have a part number for the pertronix 6v+ ? They told me they didn't have one. Wayne P. They didn't give me a part #, but at the time I asked them I told them I was running 12v negative ground. So maybe that is why they told me there was one available. I think there are a few others here that may have used petronix on 6v pos ground. Quote
billwillard Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Daddyo, Did you call the phone # I gave? Quote
daddyo23 Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 Daddyo, Did you call the phone # I gave? I haven't called that number yet, Bill. I talked to a company that is a dealer of Pertronix and he sent me the wrong one. I happened to have an extra dizzy and I shipped that to him with the wrong part. 5 months and numerous callls finally got my dist. and money back. He said he couldn't find one from Pertronix. I guess I'll call them and hear directly from the horses mouth:rolleyes: Thanks for the number, I'll call Monday. Quote
