Frank Elder Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 I have the bypass filter, I guess, it doesn't look like the full flow filters dandy Don has posted, thanks by the way Don. Is it a throw away then replace the entire cannister or can it be opened and a new filter put in? 230-47-Dodge. Quote
TodFitch Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Seems like some cars were fitted with disposable canisters and other fitted with containers that take a disposable element. A picture of a early 1930s version of the disposable canister type can be seen at http://www.ply33.com/Backmatter/EngineColor The later ones were different color and had a MoPar label. The disposable canister type is no longer manufactured but you can still get them from eBay and at some swap meets. For various manufacturer part number to look for see: http://www.ply33.com/Parts/group10#861028 There were a number of different oil filter housings that take disposable elements. Those elements are still available at your local auto supply but you should probably take an old one to match up. Seems like lots of people find theirs need a NAPA 1080. Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 Thank you Mr. Fitch, My filter has a big bolt head on the top not an oil line, guess a replacement filter might be in my future after all,....or is it .. Quote
TodFitch Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Thank you Mr. Fitch, My filter has a big bolt head on the top not an oil line, guess a replacement filter might be in my future after all,....or is it .. If you have a big bolt on the top, then you have the type with a replaceable element within. Probably, but not certainly, a NAPA 1080 or equivalent. Removing the bolt should allow you to remove the cover and get the old element out. There should be a cover gasket that should be replaced too. I don't have this type of filter on my car but I understand that a turkey baster can be used to get the old oil out of the housing. Quote
james curl Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Mine has a 1/8" pipe plug off to one side in the bottom to drain the oil all over the side of the engine. Most parts stores carry a device to remove fluids. Mine is a round cylinder about one foot long with a tube on one end and a tee handle on the other end. The tube has a clear plastic hose about eight inches long on it which you stick into the oil and pull the tee handle out sucking a housing full of old oil from the filter cansiter. I have used mine for well over thirty years, first on my MG and my Triumphs, then on my chevy pick up and my Plymouth, better than a Turkey blaster as the rubber bulb will disintegrate from the oil and cleaner. Frank Elder Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 Is the bolt long threaded? I turned and turned and turned that thingamabob and couldn't get it to release, is there a tech tip other than being smarter than the bolt:D Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Tap gently upward on the edge of the lid and it will pop right off . They get stuck just a little . Yes , the center bolt is threaded . Quote
