jimwheeldon Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 I bought a Mopar model 604 off the Bay. I hooked up the wire marked BAT to the negative battery terminal and the rafio chassis to the positive terminal. Nothing at all lights up and it makes no sound. Anything you folks can think of to check would be helpful. Any good sources for radio tubes -capacitors and such? I'm disapointed it doesn't work...but still excited-I paid $36 with shipping , pretty cheap! Thanks- Jim Quote
norrism1 Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 I thought they were Positive groud? Quote
jimwheeldon Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 Should I have the chassis grounded negative and the bat wire hooked to positive? Quote
jimwheeldon Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 I hooked up the radio on the bench to my 6 volt charger and everything lights up except one tube. I'll check radio shack tommorow-if they can't help I can use the helpful links you provided-I see the one place sells the one I need for $2.35...thats my kind of price! Thanks one and all-Jim Quote
Don St Peter Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 You probably know about the 20A in line fuse. I'd check it first. Don Quote
Don St Peter Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Silly me! Forget fuse comment. Don Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Probably needs the paper capacitors replaced since they dry out. And the vibrators sometimes stick with age. Quote
Phil Martin Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 I took the radio out of my 50 dodge to a local shop. He called and said it is ready but haven't got there yet. He put in an electronic vibrator don' t know what else but I only owe $90. Not bad I thought. Quote

You will get the tube charts and schematics. Unless your plymouth has had its polarity changed, the chassis is positive and the lead is for the negative terminal. This is espically important if you are the one with the electronic vibrator. Wrong polarity will blow them out right now, no second chances. I've been fooling around with a couple of radios and have not purchased the electronic vibrator yet. Dennis Quote
eric wissing Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 http://members.aol.com/etetubes/index.html better prices for tubes. I doubt if the one tube is bad. They are in series, if one is bad none should light on an dc radio. Antenna is needed to getstations and speaker on some old radios should always be hooked up before powering up, not too sure about on a car radio. Eric Quote

They are in series, if one is bad none should light on an dc radio. Eric Eric, in a 6 volt radio, all of the tube heaters are in Parallel,(all of the tube numbers will start with 7 for 7 volts) same with 12 volt. The only time they were in series was for higher voltages so the combination of all of the tubes 6Be6,12AX7,and 35.... all added up to 110 volts or so. Some times they used a resistor to make the series add up to the rated voltage of the radio. My present project I have a 602 and a 802 and I tested the tubes in both with a sencor testor. All of the tubes light up in both radios meaning that the fiaments work but the 802 has five bad tubes and the 602 has only one bad tube. I'm going to fix the 602 first and then decide if I'll use the 802 as a donor chassis. Anyway, more than you wanted to know, but if a tube doesn't light, it is bad, and if a tube lights up, it isn't necessarly good. Dennis Quote
