JIPJOBXX Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I need some ideas of how to paint in the embosed letter on the rear bumper of my old Dodge. I have tried this by hand and its some what good but not great. Has anyone painted this area with something else than a paint brush? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 clean it very good...mask off the larger portion of the area..take grease and lighly apply around the lettering..spary..when it is dry..wipe the bumper..the paint will not stick where you applied grease..we used this method to repaint Crager mags for all the Sailor/Marines and thier cars when in high school.... worked at the gas station next to a local hangout..made good money doing that...was super fast and easy money Quote
greg g Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 Well that depends, I suppose you are talking about your painted black out bumpers. maybe a paint pen would work for your application. Testors also makes them should be available in hobby shops. You also might want to checkout the local body shop supply places and see if they have the figerglass abraiding pens. These have several strands of fiberglass material in a ballpoint like tool. Allows you to get into the small depressed areas to give the new paint something to bite into. If you get one of the pens, be very carefull, the strands break off during use and if you get them in you eye or nose or ears, etc it can be very uncomfortable. When is used one for doing my badge backgrounds, I used a shop vac at the time to keep the shards from getting onto or into things. Quote
kiwi mopar Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 this is want i was told by an old guy for hubcups. mask off as much as you can then spray paint. let it sime dry and then useing a hard form or soft rubber and very very fine sandpaper go lightly over the area to rough up the paint. then useing thiner and a tight rag on and the same form or rubber pad unit all the unwanted paint has gone. it come up real good and nice clean edges. PatS.... Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 And "One Shot" sign paint is the best paint for this use. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I have seen a number done with paint pens and some with brushes...however I still think that spraying is the best method for overall appearance..but then again..I have been told I always do thing the hard way... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v79/bigaadams/2003_0116Image0002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v79/bigaadams/2003_0117Image0003.jpg Quote

Niel Hoback Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 One Shot brand sign painters paint. The best adhesion there is. My dad was using it to paint signs in the 50's. It used to be made in Gary Indiana but I don't know if it still is. Quote

Frank Elder Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Wow nice website, will try it on the rear bumper lettering! Beats the tar out of testors and a camel hair brush. FRANKIE47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I need to do those parts on my car. Which paint and method did you use?Wayne P. Wayne..I tape off the majority of the area with masking tape..cleaned super good..coat the area with a thin film of your choice of antistick media..greas..etc...spary it lightly about 3 light coats of enamel..actually the lettering in the examples is high temp Chrylser engine red..when dry..carefully wipe the overspray with a tissue AWAY from the lettering..you can fine wipe the borders of the lettering with a solvent dipped Q-tip..is quite fast and easy once you do a couple..you will find your own style and tweak from there..nothing is set in stone..
