Frank Elder Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 Does anybody have good pictures of where the stock antenna goes? Pretty sure it is on the cowl and not the fender. Or are there any period alternatives that look good? One more,....hidden? FRANKIE47 Quote
Young Ed Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 Here's a few pics that I had. Just noticing mine looks bent or installed crooked. Hopefully its not the hole in the cowl thats off. This one shows pretty clearly where the hole is. I should have a pic somewhere of the parts car I did that had it on the drivers side. Its not online though probabyl at home. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 What I consider to be the "correct" antenna placement is on the curve of the cowl....the antenna has a curved base. The original type antenna as supplied by Chrysler looked like this one. Has the tube at the bottom, and attaches to the inner fender with the "strap" for support. If you put them over too far, on the flat area, they are in your line of vision. You can buy these aftermarket replacement antennas at swap meets fairly cheap. Similar ones are sold in auto stores and other places. One has a slanted base, the other a flat one. They would have been located on Dodges just like Plymouths. Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 dodgepu1946- Of course you were already at work! I have oddball hours-10 am to 6:30 pm. I guess they think I have nothing better to do! I had never heard of a passenger side mount that was interesting. Maybe owner installed? Thank you, for answering my PM. BOB T, Love that shiny stick! Did it come with your vert or did you install it? Shell...That looks like some of the drawn magazine placements! You even have beltline Mirror, wish I did. Gents, I believe I've got the general idea thanks to your wonderful pictures! Thank you one and all, FRANKIE47 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 BOB T, Love that shiny stick! Did it come with your vert or did you install it? Frankie......not sure just what you mean......if you mean the antenna--it was bought at some swap meet and is not the original one. Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 Yessiree Bob I meant the antenna! Sorry to be vague, that was an expression that my father used for a good looking piece of chrome. All your help is greatly appreciated! FRankie47 Quote
Young Ed Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 Ah I start at 7am. Nice. I can't say if mine was factory installed or not. I believe lots of them were dealer installed. Mine still had the mopar factory unit installed on that side. The parts car had a factory one on the drivers side. Whats right? who knows. I suspect since the dealers installed a lot of these that either side is fine. I'm rather glad mine is over there so I don't have to see it as much. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I'm not sure if the factory actually installed the radios. If they did, they may have sent the antenna in the car for the dealer to install. Otherwise, the radio was a totally dealer installed thing. Hence the varying locations. My 47 Plym had a radio when I got it.....had the antenna as pictured with the round tube and attaching strap at the bottom. But the staff was broken - so I somewhere found the current antenna. It will go down real short, which I like. Have no idea what it was really for originally. Before I recently sold the 54 Plymouth, I removed the original style antenna for possible future use. Figured the next owner could put on whatever kind he likes. I like to have original style parts and pieces for mine, even if I don't use them. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 (edited) I have a D24 Custom Special...this car came tricked out from the factory with a whole assortment of options...radio just being one of them...the antennea on that jewel is also original with the red tip on the top of the aerial..I acquired this car from the original family..let me change computer and upload a pic if possible.. might be a bit of a strain to see..but can get you a close up later if you want...thought I had one already..but not so.. Frank Elder Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 Well ,HEEEDOUBLEHOCKEYSTICKS! It seems to me that there is no original spot for the shiney stick unless ordered from the factory. If you order a copy of the build sheet as per your serial no.,and it was radio delete, you have the option of putting it any where you please. All you have to say is that is the side the dealer installed it on! Thanks FRANKIE47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 as a note to the curious..on my 51/52 Plymouths....there is a preformed knockout plug on the cowl for the aerial wire, it there in the same location on either side of the body..your choice of what fender/cowl panel to mount it on.. Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 Sipping and sitting and sizing up the situation. Hmmmm, could I use a power antenna with a RUNTZ attached, or would it just go up more slowly if wired solo? Or could I go with a hidden antenna say between the headliner und das roof? Time to add a pickled egg to the thought process FRANKIE47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 thats the beauty behind ownership..it is yours to do as you wish without regard to what may or may not be stock, accepted, considered the norm or anything as such...personally I like the aerial cowl mounted on stand offs...I have modified my 41 Dodge to this aerial and it just seems to suit the car... Frank Elder Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 Hey Tim! I put my screen up to 150%, and saw your antenna quite well. On 100% I thought it looked a little strange. Lo and behold you had left a push broom or something in the background when the photo was taken. Thanks for making me play where's Waldo! FRANKIE47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 if you want a better shot..say the word..will try to get them tomorrow after work..plan to be out working my rear fenders..got the fronts worked these past couple evening..they be in primer..got two spots I missed on the right one..primer shows more than the hand can feel at times.. Frank Elder Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 I'm good! Already downloaded your picture for future placement. If I go your route I will PM you for measurements. Thank you Tim, you are a PEACH! FRANKIE47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Frankie..with peaches you sometimes get cream..here is a better pic for you as I had the camera in the barn this evening for another shot... Edited May 20, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
windsor8 Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Antenna location on my 46 D-24. Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 20, 2008 Author Report Posted September 20, 2008 Evidently antenna placement is in the wind, if it had some undercoatney I'd bet there would be a different answer! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Frankie..nine times out of ten the placement of your antenna if you are not replacing an already previous mounted aerial will be dictated by the shape and and style mounting base of what you intend to use..as you can see in my application, the base for that antenna is completely body formed for where it mounts. If I wereto break the base or lose a piece I am sure I would be out of luck ever getting another base same as the one on my car. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 25, 2008 Author Report Posted October 25, 2008 1999 dodge ram pickem up antenna has the correct curveture on the mounting base to be placed on the cowl and still look like it belongs! This means I can replace the stock black ant. from the truck with a chrome stick or an electric model and still have the correct mount. Or at least where I think it's correct, let's not start that again! Glad we can keep it dodge. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 My antenna is in about the same location as Tim's. I'm assuming it was put in that location by the dealer since the radio is an original 802. As mentioned by many of us, probably doesn't matter because each dealer may have put them someplace else. I'm also posting a picture of three P15's at the end of the assembly line. It appears none have radios in them because there is no antenna. I also have another assembly line picture of P15's and one Woody and none of those have antenna's either. So.......looks like most, if not all radios were installed at the dealer. Tim, If you break that antenna base by accident, you can get another one that will fit that spot. I have an NOS adjustable base one in the basement. See them all the time at swap meets. In fact, the antenna base on my coupe is an adjustable base one. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Well my antena is located just infrount of the drivers door. I think it was up to the dealership that sold the cars to put the antena where they wanted to put it. The radio on some models was an after market and so I think the antena was also. Jon PS. Check out the happy wife and the cute kids in the car. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 25, 2008 Author Report Posted October 25, 2008 Jip that works wonderfully on your car, but unfortunately, 47 front fender is not condusive to double mount ant. Thanks norm if I ever get my p-15 thats where I want mine, not in drivers direct sight. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 You can buy these aftermarket replacement antennas at swap meets fairly cheap. Similar ones are sold in auto stores and other places. One has a slanted base, the other a flat one. They would have been located on Dodges just like Plymouths. Bob, The antenna on the right with the flat base looks like the same type as the NOS one I have in the basement and the one on the fender of my coupe. By loosening the nut on top of the black part, the antenna will move from side to side, so you can put it on a curved surface. As mentioned the same type is on the curve of my fender. So you can position the angle that the antenna goes up then tighten that nut again to hold it in place. They are more or less universal fit. Quote
