  1. I’ve got a 1950 desoto that I just got home and it does run, but as soon as you connect the negative battery cable to the battery (cable running to solenoid) the starter is spinning, I can crank the motor over this way if I push the lever for the bendix in and out to engage the teeth to the flywheel this is how I got it started, but the only way to prevent the starter from spinning is to pull the cable off of the battery, I have only previously worked on dodges and Plymouth’s which do not have this type of set up. I know these solenoids are pretty much impossible to get, is there any way they can be repaired? I’ve seen a few rebuild kits for them on eBay, but I don’t really even understand how they work, any help would be appreciated thanks.
  2. So, here is the story so far My Windsor does not shift up as it should. i have read through several manuals about this and found out that i should test the wiring/connections with a testlight. In the maual it says that you should connect one wire to the Governor and the other to the solenoid, turn on the ignition and then the light should go on and when you speed up the engine it should go out. In my case the light doesnt even go on from the beginning. what is wrong ? I suppose that it is the wiring, there are some old ragged cables. The manual also says that i should connect it to the "red" wire terminal on the solenoid, witch one is that ? is it the upper one or the lower? i cant se any other colour on the cables then grease, dirt and oil... hehe Could it be that my idle is not set right? i read that it is supposed to be set at 475 rpm, how important is it that it is exactly 475 regards // Peter from Sweden
  3. My engine started really fast on April 21st. I posted the video on the 22nd and the engine has never started since, Flickr page video link https://www.flickr.c...05/17232111652/ Since April: I installed the radiator and had a leak in the front of the engine, missing bolt in timing chain back plate. Brunt out a 12 volt and 6 volt fuel pump. Purchased a manual fuel pump before my vacation in May, finally got it installed and working yesterday. Turns over slow and yesterday I bought a new battery. The reason I bought the new battery was that the car turned over so much faster with the spark plugs removed. so I thought that it was a load problem. NO CHANGE. I haven't changed the distributor or carburetor. Question: The negative battery cable and the solenoid are hot on the battery side and not on the starter side, and the engine still turns slowly. Any ideas?
  4. Hi, seems very difficult to get a 51 Desoto starter solenoid rebuilt ( it is the one mounted on the starter and has a lever to push forward the starter gear) so I wondered if other years of starters will fit. For example will a 49 Chrysler starter ( which seems much longer) fit and of course it will have a separate solenoid . Is there a preferred place to mount a separate solenoid? Are there any solenoid kits available? Thank you, Michael
