  1. If you're looking for stainless steel with only some pitting, don't miss this item: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1954-plymouth-tail-fin-stainless_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ140704QQihZ009QQitemZ190047737452QQrdZ1
  2. Both are great cars, guys. Bob, if you change them to park towards the center, I guess you'd need to flip some linkage underneath the dash so they don't try to wipe the cowl.
  3. If you have a fuel filter, check that it's not clogged. That would include the little strainer in the glass bowl area of the fuel pump.
  4. I had a 57 Belvedere, Florida car, looked great, had new paint when I bought it, but the floor pans were so rusted that one night when I accelerated hard at a green light the front bench seat tore loose and the 3 of us in the seat tipped backwards into the rear seat area. That took my foot off the gas and we coasted to a stop. I fixed it by looping plumber's strap over the seat mounts and bolting it to anything in the floor that would hold a bolt. It was an ill fated car and in the hands of a goofy teenager (me) it went to the wrecking yard within months.
  5. I think mine is in a black and red can. It's kinda rough on plastic parts though. The Radio Shack stuff might be better for stuff like crackly radio controls. It's a little easier on plastics.
  6. It already looked good. Post some pics for sure.
  7. Are you originally from Joisey? I grew up near Hackensack.
  8. Last time I saw the motor in Robert's car, there wasn't a lot of oil leakage evident. Now, there was a recent valve job, and it could be that in refilling the crankcase some oil got spilled onto the generator, and if that metal band were missing it could have pooled inside the case. Other than gunking up the brushes and armature, it should not have stopped the generator from generating. Ed, they used to use carbon tetrachloride for cleaning electrical stuff but I guess it got banned. CRC makes a product called Lectra-Clean that comes in a tall spray can like brake cleaner. It works real well and doesn't leave a residue of lubricant. They sell it at Pep Boys or Auto Zone. Here's a link: http://www.crcindustries.com.au/catalogue.nsf/web_brands/Lectra+Clean?openDocument
  9. I'd put it in a rear end if it was getting noisy, until I could fix it properly. I think it might have a bad effect on shifting in a synchro tranny though. Do they still sell STP? Seems like I haven't seen it on the shef in a long time.
  10. The only odd thing to me is that excessive oil would somehow mess up an armature or the field coils. Sure, it could gunk up the brushes and the armature but that's easily cleaned off.
  11. If it's the same car that's in your profile, I'd keep the front end you have. Looks like it's going to be a mean machine.
  12. Tod, I'll double check to make sure it isn't the u joints but I'm pretty sure this is coming from the tranny. And Pete, I may be picking your brain a bit when I tear into mine. I haven't disassembled a trans since the 60's. Mike, I checked my Hollander book and the 3 speed should fit. Hollander isn't always right but it says other than the change in synchro types, the manual trannies are considered identical and interchangeable from 1941-56 except for the p17, p19 and p22 2 door sedan and 3 coupe. And in the notes it says the 3 speed will swap with the OD trans. The length measures the same overall so no driveshaft issues. The only difference they note is that on the 41-48 the speedo cable is on the right and 49 up it's on the left. Thanx guys.
  13. Robert, I have a spare used generator in the shed if you need it. It came with the motor I rebuilt and as far as I know it's in working condition. It will fit your car.
  14. Well, no matter how solidly I shift into reverse, I'm getting quite a bit of knocking when I back up. First gear seems pretty quiet though. I hate to go through the R&R again but better to attack it now rather than out on the road somewhere. Mine is a 53 3 speed with R 10 OD. I have a spare 3 speed non-OD that I could use for parts. I'd love to have George Asche go through mine but shipping it back east would be a pain. I'm hoping I might locate a 3 speed locally that I can put in while going through my original. Anyone in Southern CA have an extra?
  15. I didn't have the camera with me but I'll be back over there and I'll see if the old gent is interested in parting with it, just for curiosity. The car is really complete.
  16. I helped a friend get his busted 66 Mustang to his repair shop yesterday. One of those little shops behind a used car lot. As I was waiting for him to check his car in, I wandered out back and there were 2 56 Chevy wagons, (one 2 door), a Willys Overland wagon, a Jeepster, and best of all a Chrysler New Yorker, amongst the other non-drivers in a mini junkyard. The New Yorker was a 50-54 model, I'm not up on the identifying points for these. 4 door, light green, and an original condition survivor, had every piece of trim still on it, some air in the tires, absolutely no rust through, an automatic trans, and when I popped the hood, a complete Fire Power Hemi!. The only thing missing was the oil bath air filter (someone had put on a paper element type) and the air conditioning compressor. The platform was there, it must have been a York type compressor. It even had the generator with the power steering pump on the back. I had to run from the area, chanting my mantra, "I don't have anyplace to put it...."
  17. Dwight, did you just recently post about a recent hunting trip? I just put up a question in the off topic area, maybe you could take a look?
  18. Looks good Mike. And good to hear from you on the forum again.
  19. Really cool site Robert. The graphics layout is easy on the eyes. Tell Jenny I said hi.
  20. There's a NOS Savoy piece on ebay, but it's for a 54. Pricey.
  21. Looks like the spacing on the plug holes is wrong for a Mopar.
