  1. Ok, this may sound kind of dumb, but how would I tell if it's engine or gear oil? I guess it didn't seem abnormally thin when I put my fingers in it so I didn't really consider gear oil, but I guess it's a possibility.
  2. I was changing the tires on the passenger side of my P15 this afternoon and as such had one side of the car jacked up pretty high and the car was at a steep angle. After working for a while I noticd a fairly large pool of oil that had formed - more so on the driver side than directly under the motor. I crawled under assuming I would see a definite leak since the puddle was substantial. Well, whatever it was, I missed it and couldn't findany obvious wet spots under the motor and the leaking had stopped. Once the tires were changed and I lowered the car I checked the engine oil level. It wasn't substantially down. My question is if there is someplace on the motor or trans (3sp) where oil could spill out of if the car was at an extreme angle? Is there someplace I should check? The only sealI haven't replaced within the past year is the rear axle seal since I don't have room in my garage to pull away the transmission, but I assume if the leak wer there that I would have a puddle centered under the rear of the motor no matter what the angle is. That much oil on the ground concerns me, but I'm at a loss. Any ideas??
  3. Ok, so despite the fact that my garage floor currently looks more like an oil field than a concrete slab, that's an easy fix. I've purchased about every oil seal and gasket out there and will be doing a little work this weekend. However, a new occurrence that I found last night while digging around was a spot of antifreeze building up on top of the oil slick. So I crawled under the car to look and found that the coolant seems to be coming from the back of the motor. The gasket between the block and the clutch shield was saturated and dripping down the clutch shield. I am thinking it's the freeze plug back there, but I'm not 100%. Any ideas on this one? I've never had to deal with freeze plugs, so I don't know much about them, but I read somewhere in the service manual that there was a plug on the back of the motor beneath the clutch shield, so I'm hoping that is the problem... If anybody else has seen this or had to deal with this, I'd love to hear about your experience.
  4. Ok, since I have too many clips broken and 1 wheel without any, I have decided not to go with the original dog dish hubcaps on my '47. However, I have zero experience with baby moons and have no idea how they connect to the wheel, so could anybody provide any insight as to if they would even fit my wheels or what size I would even need? Mr. Gasket sells ones sized for Mopar, but they couldn't tell me if they would fit a '47... Any ideas?
  5. Ok, here's a couple of silly questions, but bothersome none-the-less First, was an oil filter not standard equipment on a P15? I was looking at the owners manual which clearly shows an oil filter and covers filter maintenance, but when I pop the hood and look there's nothing in the spot where the filter canister should be. If that is indeed the case, does anybody know where I might be able to locate a filter assembly that would be somewhat close to original? Second, as far as I can tell, I have 2 original wheels and 2 non. They're the same style except the 2 non-original wheels are missing the brackets that hold on the dog dishes. Does anybody know if those brackets are available anywhere, or how they attached to the wheel? Or will I need to find 2 more original wheels? Thanks!!
  6. Ok, so being the new guy to the scene, I have to say that I was a bit surprised as to the setup of the blowby pipe. I noted some oil under the car and crawled under to take a look only to find quite a bit of oil on the underside of the car. Not dripping, just a nice coat (hey, helps against corrosion anyway!). On corners or angles, there was lots of old buildup, so I would guess it's nothing new. Anyway, this is when I figured out that the blowby tube was a downdraft tube. It looked like the oil on the underside of the car was coming from the outlet of the tube, which makes sense, but I guess I'm at a loss as to how much oil loss would be considered "normal." I have had crankcase breathes get fouled before, but I've never contended with a non-filtered pipe like this so I have never noted how much oil actually makes it out the pipe. Thanks!
  7. Well, I found that my biggest problem was bad gas and a dirty tank and filter. The guy who sold me the car didn't bother to tell me he didn't do anything to the tank when he pulled it out of the barn other than drain it and fill it back up. So the hill climbing is probably not going to be a problem. The shop I brought it to to have the tank restored and sealed went over the motor and said the only thing I needed was new points. Otherwise it was sound and solid. So I'm doing a full ignition system overhaul to go along with the fresh gas tank and filter, so I should be back in business this week.
  8. Hmm, I'll have to do some work! It looks like somebody added a heater fan control after the fact as there is a knob on the passenger side above the footwell that turns on a fan. It's kinda neat though, and lights up when it's turned on... Otherwise it looks like most everything else is there, including the original cigarette lighter.

  10. Hi all, I am a new proud owner of a 1947 Special Deluxe. It's a beautiful barn find and runs like it's new. The odometer reads 1200 and it is working, so I don't know if it's original, a new dash cluster or what, either way it's in great shape. However, I have some questions. First, where do you people usually shift at? I live in a very hilly area and I wasn't sure what speed is ok to go from 3rd to 2nd. Maybe I'm just paranoid because of the age of the car, but 55mph seems too fast to go to 2nd when hill climbing... However, as I found out, it's easy to kill it hill climbing in 3rd... Also, does anybody have any good pictures of a stock dashboard? A very long time ago somebody made some mods and added a very old aftermarket turn signal setup and I want to return things to original. An old timer up here looked at the aftermarket setup and said it was common in those days because it actually turned off as the wheel was turned like today's cars... However it's ugly and not original, so I am wondering what the original setup looked like. I also heard that there was an indicator on the dash, which is no longer there... I have a small attachment point on the dash centered over the steering wheel that looks like some sort of indicator might have originally been hooked up there, but I don't know for sure. I also think the heater fan controls may have been changed, but I don't know what the original looked like, so I can't say for sure. The other ? is about the driver's side spotlight. I can't tell if it's original equipment or if it was added on after the fact. It's very old, I can tell that much, but is there any way to tell if it was original equipment or if the original owner added it on later? I've got a million more questions, but I'll start with these. I'm so very excited to start bringing up this beautiful car to original factory condition... It's going to be a real head turner when it's done!!
