  1. Re-torqued the head bolts. I was able to tighten all of them some, the middle ones a little more. As I said it only did this after sitting for a few months, might need to wait until next spring to find out if this fixed it. If not, looks like I will need to pull the head and investigate further.
  2. Only did this as a test to see if bubbles were coming up through the radiator, wanted the coolant to cover/fill the upper radiator hose. After it cooled down put the cap back on and a catch pan underneath. Restarted and let it idle for awhile and have the coolant overflow into the catch pan as it heated up.
  3. That is a possibility but in the hundreds of miles I have driven it since any major engine work I would think this would have burned out. Yes, the studs were sealed, learned that from personal experience many years ago. It only smokes/smells when it has been sitting for an extended period of time. Went and started it today after sitting for 2 days and no smoke/smell. Will try re-torquing the head bolts and see if that helps.
  4. No coolant in the oil as far as I know. Oil is clean and just below the full line. Did an oil change at 100 miles after the rebuild on nothing out of the normal. Re-torquing the head bolts is something to consider as I don't think it was probably done. Easy to do as the head bolts were numbered in the order they were torqued. Do I do this to a cold, warm, or hot engine? Pound/feet to torque it to? The shop manual is back at the building where I store it.
  5. '51 Plymouth with stock 218. Engine was rebuilt less than 1,000 miles ago. After the car has sat for a longtime (months) when starting it up I will get a strong smell of antifreeze/coolant and white smoke comes out of the exhaust for a few minutes. It has probably happened since the engine was rebuilt but never realized because I would always pull the car out right away and the weather was a always little chilly in the spring so assumed it was just vapor due to the cold air and moisture that may have been it the exhaust system, didn't really smell the coolant as by then it was idling outside. Earlier this week started it up after sitting for about 2 months and let it idle in the building before pulling it out and notice the smell/smoke. Lasted less than 5 minutes. Brought it home and checked things out a few nights later. Coolant level is okay, an inch or so above the fins. Filled it full to the top and let the car idle for 15-20 minutes and about 3/4 of the way to hot on the temp. gauge, no bubbles coming up through the radiator. Something to be overly concerned about? As posted previously this rebuilt engine runs MUCH warmer than my old engine, especially in parades, if this is related to the problem.
  6. My dad (now deceased) was born during the depression. We rarely had chicken when I was growing up, my dad said he ate enough chicken when he was a kid to last a lifetime. He also claimed when he was farming with a 2 cylinder John Deere if it bogged down enough the pistons would stand still and the tractor would move back and forth.
  7. I live across the street from the city campground. I have had campers walk across the street, go into my garden and grab a tomato, pepper, etc... When confronted they have an excuse such as " I didn't think you would miss one or two", or "I didn't see anybody out here for a few days and figured you weren't using this garden. I have explained it is PRIVATE property and offered to go back to their campsite and take something that I didn't think they were using. They didn't seem to understand my analogy. I think parking a unique or classic car in a parking lot is just asking for somebody to look and touch. Take my old car out to eat, visit a small/private business and park in their lots, sure, not usually much risk. Go shopping at Wal-Mart and park my old car in their lot, no way!
  8. I did the Jiffy Lube thing for a few years on my newer vehicles... for the price I paid with the coupons they sent me I couldn't do it at home for less than what they charged me. The final straw was when they said I needed an "injector cleaner" done as my pickup was 5 years old but had only 35,000 miles. The "advisor" said he recommended it due to the age but I questioned that shouldn't it be done according to miles? Plus the other things they tried to sell that I really didn't need. I would tell my wife not to agree to ANYTHING extra they tried to sell without contacting me first. Took my '51 Plymouth to a tire place as they had a special on a lube, oil, filter for something like 10 bucks. Furnished the filter as I knew they wouldn't have one. Didn't have straight 30w oil so told them to use 10w-30 and leave it a quart low for some STP. They were done in less than 15 minutes, I told them that was pretty quick considering part of the special was a LUBE job and that there are probably 20+ grease zerks on the car. They brought the car back in and had me go under the lift and point out all the zerks they missed which was basically everything but the tie rod ends.
  9. it was replaced about 2 years ago with a new one and a plastic(?) float. If the float had a hole I would suspect it would slowly drop to empty and not drop to empty in less than 5 or so minutes. Will need to do more checking when I get the car back home.
  10. Drove my '51 Plymouth in a nearby town's Memorial Day parade. Left home for the parade, checked gas gauge and it was between 3/4 and full, driving along about 5 miles later and notice it read empty. I know 3/4 to full is correct as I filled it up before putting it away last winter and have only driven it a few times this spring. Drove it to my other garage (15 miles from my house) to switch out with another car before coming back home. Quick check feeling under dash and wire is hooked up to gauge. Pulled rubber mat up in trunk and wire is still attached to sender. New sending unit a few years ago and no problems until now. Will be a few weeks before car comes back to my home place, wondering what to check/fix as to why the gauge just up and quit working.
  11. Problem started last fall, was a winter project, spring is here and not done yet. My clutch pedal will not return all they way when I take my foot off the pedal. Pops back about halfway and stops. Put my foot under the pedal a little lift and it come all the way back on it's own. Was a problem before I had the engine rebuilt and after reinstalled was okay for a few years but problem is back. Have the car up on ramps and jack stands to fix but don't want to start messing with things and throw other stuff out of adjustment.
  12. Longest running prime time. Meet the Press has been on the air since 1947, Face the Nation since 1954.
  13. Going through my dad's stuff since he passed away last year and came across a box labeled "Mopar back-up light, Factory engineered and inspected". The factory sticker says- 1 part No.1383723 (Pair), For all 1950-51 Plymouths; Dodge D33 and D41 2 Door Sedans. Question, why can it only be used on 2 Door sedans? On the very bottom it has "Form 518-JAN'51" so I could see why 1952 wasn't listed. Box was opened but appears to be complete with instructions. Thought about installing it on my '51 Plymouth convertible if it doesn't look too difficult except I don't have a 2 door sedan.
  14. How do they cook them? We always boiled the piss out of them.
  15. Best thing I did with my not so neighborly neighbor was to have my property surveyed and found the actual property lines. Gained 4 trees (that he had planted on "his" property) and he was pissed!
  16. Took I-90 across southern Minnesota to get to South Dakota when I took the family to Mt.Rushmore a few years ago. Stopped at Wall Drug in Wall, SD and the Corn Palace in Mitchell SD. Didn't realize it until after the fact but drove close to the Pioneer Auto Museum in Murdo, SD. Looks like it would have been a worthwhile stop.
  17. Curiosity got to me so I took "inventory".... 175 on display, 200 more or so that are duplicates or common bottles (Coke, Pepsi, 7-UP) that is trading stock and sitting in a closet. Looks like I will have to hit the garage sales and flea markets this summer to catch up to Dan.
  18. I have a collection of soda pop bottles with ACL labels. Mostly local/non-name brands plus some of the "filled by" Mountain Dew bottles. Majority are 12oz. or less plus a few big glass quart ones. Also made a 3 hr round trip today to pick up an EM pinball machine, "Sky Divers" by Bally. Worked at an arcade as a teenager and enjoy tinkering with them to try to get them working again.
  19. I put white metal liner (metal roofing for inside) on walls and ceiling for my garage. Brightens the place up. What I wish I would have done but wasn't financially feasible at the time is LED lighting. Was installed at work and what a difference compared to florescent lighting. Cost has come down and my Brother in law installed it in his new garage.
  20. Noticed the 20 MPH sign. Going 20 MPH over a speed bump is going to jar you and your vehicle pretty good.
  21. They are showing up on this post fine on my computer. Even after I logged in/out. Tried quoting myself and they showed up also. Will try what P15-D24 suggested when I have time.
  22. I did post the pictures under the "add files". Didn't work. Dragged and clicked and seems to have worked this time.
  23. Found this going through my dad's stuff. Where was it used? Guessing late 50s/early 60s with the style of the car. 14 pages total.
  24. Just got done reading the "thermostat question" post and reminded me of my "running hot or not" post from awhile back. Where is the best place to take the coolant temperature with the digital heat gun to compare to what the gauge says? Obviously the hottest place you can read but where would that be? Thermostat housing? Where the temp gauge goes in to the block? Few weeks ago bought a digital temperature gun and would like to try it out next year as the car is put away for the winter.
  25. He has a part I need. At the moment his price is a little steep for what I am willing to pay but the part isn't critical to the operation of my vehicle. Keep checking eBay, Craigslist, etc... to see if I can find it cheaper. He is a little "short" when it comes to communication with him but if I got a bunch of emails like he probably does I wouldn't be too chatty either. P.S. Anybody have a silver faced 1982-83 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth AM/FM or AM/FM/Cassette radio for a K-car on the cheap to replace mine?
