  1. Had tabled this idea but may have some time this week and we'll see what we can scan and edit. Then we'll post it as an attachment and get opinions. If we can get 'pastees' then anyone can upgrade their speedo. May do the faces for the temp and amps as well as those also get messed up. No promises, OK?

  2. My son was going to scan the original face, put the scan on Photo____ to make a clean copy, then we were going to (1) buy some adhesive backed photopaper print out our new face and paste it on or (2) burn it onto a CD disc and use that for our face. On the CD disc we were not certain how we were going to make the rectangular opening for the odometer but thought we might be able to cut it out with a dremel. So there are a couple of wild ideas of ours. Anyone have an extra speedo or a way to put in a new axle for my needle and Frankie, Viagra won't work!:D

  3. I'm not crazy about the wheels and tires either, but I like what he did to the paint. For me, on that car, original wheels painted a deep brown would look cool. The car looks like a 47+/- Plymouth BUSINESS coupe. Am I correct?

  4. Figured I'd also give one of me and my lovely wife, picture taken in Vermont last summer. We have a son and his family there so we now spend a greater part of summer in Bath Maine where they live. Beautiful country. Next summer will have to find out where the North Eastern Forum members are and take a nice weekend trip and meet you guys.

  5. I did the same thing and forced the needle off, , , well actually I BROKE the needle's shaft and now I have a broken speedometer. After looking at it in its broken state, it appears that you have to take the mechanism apart from the back to get to the needle and remove it, whatever, be tender, it is NOT unbreakable.

  6. My recollection was that the business coupe had a single bench with good access to the back through larger doors and a longer trunk lid. It was for the traveling salesman, Fuller Brush and Watins Products. A neighbor / rancher used one for his 'tool' car instead of a pickup.

A five passenger coupe was just that as differienciated from a "Tudor Sedan" which was for six passengers, i.e., a sedan.

My recollection is that the business coupe ceased in about 1955. Pictures of each style would be nice.

  7. To install this axle and springs, I would guess I would remove axle, springs, and shackles then weld the new assembly onto the frame. Any suggestions on how to place and square the axle? Since the drive line is telescoping there would be some forgiveness on the distance between the tranny, but it cannot go on unsquared. I've found all things seem easy until you remove something. Will the original wheels fit the bolts? I am a novice at this so must ask simple questions.

  8. Look at the 51 Fargo Thread. I think your color would look much like that once it is cleaned up! I am a 'survivor paint' advocate and I like your color. Good luck as you keep opening up your 'present'!

Also lots of parts get listed as time goes along. Got my hood from Hilimar, CA, my radio from Reg, a dash hood from Washington state and just put dibs on a rear end from north/central CA. This forum is a God-send for us novices!

  9. Clean that red and it will shine again, very little expense just some good elbo grease. Look at what came out of my surface. Yours will be even better. The truck was light blue when I hauled it home, 17 years of oxidation. Amazing what is under that oxidation. Look at pictures in threads entitled "Patina" and Patina #2 to see more before and after pictures. Good luck, you are in for a lot of good surprises.

  10. I have a pair of clutches and flywheels. One pair I know is very old, quite possibly original, the other possibly newer. Is there a way to determine if either is usable? Does the non-metal parts on a clutch plate dry out or are then made of a metal composite? I just revealed my ignorance concerning such.

I have an engine on order for Easter pickup and installation and the clutch/tranny happens about the same time/sequence. Just read through the search posts on clutches so got a good start there.

  11. I'd love to have your '50 fast back but can't this year. Post a picture, my first car was a '50 fastback. Can't tell all that happened in that car! Drove it to CA in '58. Had a couple cans of beer to open when we crossed the CA border. Salt Lake City is a dry town, driving through some high school boys were driving along side, so we threw a can to them. When they opened it it all turned to foam and most of the contents went to the ceiling. Never forget how we all laughed.:D

  12. Was looking at your back fenders, was wondering what that would look like on my truck, I kindof like the look. Have also wondered what the truck would look like if the front fender moldings were also painted black.

Was also looking at your paint. I think if you would thorougly clean that paint (lacquer thinner) then very lightly wet/sand it with 600 or higher grit paper you might find a very bright red hiding undereneigth all that oxidation. I used 200 and 400 grit, not knowing higher numbers existed and I took off a lot more paint than I should have.
