  1. I really hate to sell the car, and since it has no brakes, moving it is problematic. It would make a great project for someone. It is like my cats I'm forced to try to re-home, the price is secondary to finding them a good home. I would sell for a very fair price to the "right" person. I had an offer from someone that just wanted the overdrive and was gonna parts out the car. I just dont want to know...
  2. I am moving to San Francisco, and must sell my one-family-owned '53 Plymouth Cranbrook 4-dr, with overdrive. Original: paint, interior, engine, transmission. NO RUST. Sold new to my Grandma in New Mexico in 1953. Been in Texas since 2009. Always garaged, for 59 years! I am unsure what would be the best place to advertise my car. eBay is too expensive, CL is hit or miss, any suggestions? The car will start and run, (smokes) but has NO brakes. Overdrive works. Any ideas for experienced car sellers would be appreciated. Thanks, James
  3. Great Story! I can relate to the car as a family heirloom. I have a '53 Plymouth Cranbrook (which brought me here) that was purchased new by my great-aunt. And I have a '65 Ford F100 and a '72 Cutlass purchased new by my dad. I just moved to the Bay Area, if you ever need a hand...I'm not much of a mechanic, but I can lift and hold heavy stuff while other people wrench on it!
  4. Bob, Thank you so much! Now to narrow it down. I'm still deciding what to do with this car, I don't have room to store it, but hate to sell it at the same time. The car is a time capsule, a real "garage find". Original everything. After doing some research, the 1953 Cranbrook 4-door could be the least valuable of all cars made by the big three in '53! Oh well, if she bought a '53 Skylark Convertible, I never would have gotten it from the family! Thanks again!
  5. Anybody remember the name of the Mopar dealers in ABQ in 1953? I'm just curious about where my car was purchased. My great-aunt bought the car new in '53 in ABQ. I thought my Google skills were good, but no luck this time...
  6. I found an engine and I need help figuring out what it is. The number on the block is: P26*378645 Thanks in advance for any help.
  7. I have had J C Taylor for years. I recently backed my '65 Ford F100 into a tree (dont ask)...anyway, I called the claims dept and they told me to fax in one estimate from the shop of my choice. I did, and three days later I got a check in the mail for the entire amount. They were really fast, and I would recommend them to anyone. BTW, I just insured my '53 Cranbrook for $57 per year.
  8. Johnny thanks so much for the pics. I'll think I will look around for a repop decal for mine. regards, James
  9. Thanks for the info. Anybody have a pic or scan of one that would have been on my car?
  10. '53 Cranbrook What used to be on the riveted oval plate on the firewall of my Cranbrook? It is right above the model plate.
  11. Yeah, it was a 1 not an L. Luckily for me, the great state of Texas only cared about getting their money for the registration, and they did not look too hard at the title info. $146.00 later I have my 1953 Texas plates on my Plymouth and they don't expire until 2013, and since the world is gonna end in 2012, I'm good forever!
  12. I received my '53 Cranbrook from my Grandmother via an Uncle. I have the original 1953 New Mexico title. The vehicle number on the title is the # on the engine, P24******. The number on the riveted plate on the door sill is: L3215705. This number appears nowhere on the title. Also, the car is listed as an 8 cylinder Fury.???? I haven't gotten it registered in Texas yet, but I'm sure that I will have a few problems. What number appears on your paperwork?
  13. So, can I drive around with the OD engaged all the time?
  14. Is that why the car is so darn hard to push? Is the car "free-wheeling" when the OD is dis-engaged and in neutral?
  15. Boy, that is just the opposite of what I would think. The handle has been in the pushed in position ever since I got the car. So the way it's pictured it is engaged?
  16. '53 Cranbrook--My car has overdrive. I can't drive it yet as there are no brakes! But when it does move, how does the overdrive work? Do I just yank out the handle when I'm driving?
  17. Greg, Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. regards, james
  18. I've checked all the vendor sites linked from this site looking for a rear window rubber seal for my '53 Cranbrook. There seams to be a gap in the availability, no applications for '50 to '53 Plymouth. Any ideas as to where I can get rear window gasket?
  19. I just received a box of misc stuff from my Grandmother's estate. In addition to the car and the stuff pictured, I also received every registration from 1953 to 1977 when the car was parked.
  20. I'm looking for the PLYMOUTH script that is on the driver's side bottom of the trunk lid. I was watching an auction on Ebay for an NOS piece. It ended up selling for $222.50. Is that crazy, or what? I don't think that I'm that out of touch, but this is my first vintage Mopar! Any other source for this part? James
  21. The only things my car is missing are: 2- 15" wheel covers, and the PLYMOUTH script from the left side of the truck lid.It had a broken tail light lens, but already found one. I have a self-imposed budget of $750 for the car. I dropped $650 for the '55 drivetrain, so I have to find the hubcaps and script on the cheap! One thing I'm curious about is the number 2197 is written in grease pencil on the firewall, and it also appears on a maintenance tag that is on the back side of the glove box. Any ideas?
  22. Thanks for all the info. The car is now in North Richland Hills,TX (DFW). When I found out I was getting the car, I had thoughts of restoring it back to the way it was when my Grandma drove us around in it, but after seeing it, it still looked the same. So now, I just want to get it running so I can cruise around town and enjoy it. After checking online and other sources, It was difficult to find an early 50's American car that had less value than a 4-door 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook! I have only owned the car for a week, but it is really growing on me. I am going to swap the engine with the '55 engine I just bought mainly for economic reasons, I bought the whole rebuilt, running, drivetrain for less than I could buy the parts to rebuild my original engine. At least I'm not throwing in a small block and a turbo 350!
  23. I am so glad I found this forum, it's just what I needed! I just received from a relatives estate, a 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook. The car has original paint, interior, and drivetrain. It even has the grease pencil marks on the firewall when it came down the line. It has a three speed with overdrive. The last time I drove this car was in 1977. Even back then it smoked like a chimney, so a rebuild is in order. For the time being, i just bought a rebuilt 1955 P26 engine and am going to swap it out while I slowly rebuild the original. I know it's late to ask but, will this engine bolt up to my '53 overdrive tranny? Also, any idea what this car is worth? It has been garaged every day since it was new and lived its whole life until now in New Mexico. I look forward to picking your collective brains while I start this new project. Regards, James
