  1. I can trace wiper motors for trico upto 1949 via the AEA motors catalog that I have so if anyone else has any questions and want to verify I can look it up for you. Bob, good luck on finding a spare glad the information was of value to you. Rich Hartung
  2. if you unscrew the temp bulb out of the head on the side of the motor you will also need to drain some of the water out of the motor block before you take the temp bulb out of the engine block or you will have water coming out of the engine. If you have some extra length on the metal line that runs from the head through the firewall then you might beable to have enough room to rewire the instrument panel without disconnecting the temp unit from he block. rich Hartung
  3. 4. I do not think the 39 Desot0, Chrysler Dodge trunk lid will work onthe car. The 38 If I remember correctly had a bustle back setup. The trunk lid on the 39's flow with the entire body and the 39's do not have the bustle back style. Rich Hartung 1939 Desoto owner. Desoto1939@aol.com
  5. My tank on my 39 desoto at the rear and dead center bottom has a metal plug that you takeout to drain the tank Rich HArtung
  6. Don you can always open up the old FP to see how it works and never throw it away. You keep the parts as spares. What I am trying to say is that if the cost is almost equal to a fresh new pump then why would you go to the expense to order a kit and then rebuild it and then always have to wonder if it was rebuilt correctly. If the kit cost like 10 dollars then yes rebuild the pump. I prefer to have a fresh new modern pump as a spare instead of a rebuilt pump. that is my preference. Same with water pumps you can buy a kit for 50-60 dollars but you can buy a brand new water pump for $50 with all new gaskets and it is ready to install. Just my 25 cents worth. rich Hartung
  7. if the pump has been rebuilt you had to punch out the pin and then the hole gets alittle iggerI have New Fuel Pumps in my 39 and not rebuilt pumps the pin has not moved. I think the pin moving out of the hole is because the pin is pushed out and the hole get bigger from pushing it out. So if a kit cost 40 dollars and you have to rebuild and then there is the possibilty of the pin issue then just two new pumps and avaoid the hassle. Up here in PA and the Northeast we do not have the option of non ethanol at our stations around the Philadelphia area.. When I spoke to the Airtex Tech rep about the pin issue they have stated that they have not had any reported issues of this type on new pumps. I did this when I was inquiring about the Airtex fp 73201 which is the new replacement for the old AC588 pump which is just a remanufacture of the old pump with some modifications. 8. What do mean the engine willnot run on it, ethinol? The fuels that you are getting at the gas sations all now have a blend of ethinol. I am not saying straight ethinol. You can get rqacing fuel at some stations up here in PA but you are paying a steep price for it. So what happens when you put fuel in the car. Does it start or not start? What is the issue. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. If it were me I would just get a new pump that supports the ethanol fuels. By the time you buy a kit for around $40 dollars then have to take the old pump apart drive out the pin then rebuild it then drive it the new pin and people have been saying that the pins are sometimes working their way out of the body and then the pump fails then have to take it out again so this is time and money. Go buy a new pump for a little more money have a new unit put it in with a new fuel rubber line and you are good to go. WHy rebuild if you can just teplace with a fresh unit. This is my two cents. Also if you have a fuel filter on the line to the carb also replace that at the same time. Just did a search on the Parts Geek: www.partsgeek.com. Found a 1955 Plymouth Airtex fuel pump for $49.35 plus shipping. Airtex is a good pump. A kit will cost the same. I just checked the link fromthe prior posting and their kits range from $39.50 to $54.50 and you still have to rebuild the old fp. So way each cost and do what works best for you. 10. Here is the Brake Cable Venders information He has a vender spot in the Choclate feild at Hershey and has been there for many years Also sell power steering hoses. Brake cables by George 1510 King Street Lebanon, PA Phone 717-273-9502 Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  11. There is a gentleman that Lives in Lebanon PA that is vender for power sterring hoses and emergency brake cables. He has fair prices and is very easy to work with. I am am work but will up date this posting with his information when i get home tonight. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  12. In my 39 desoto parts listing in the gasket section under brake service for the flexible hose to front cylinders and rear axle tee they list a gasket as part number 692166. From what I remember mine are flat washers about the size of a nickel. Do you have a part number on your gaskets and approx at what year did they use this style. I have flat spots where my rubber line connect to the whell cylinders and not the recessed like in your photos. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  13. I have both the 3 leg puller and one similar to what Ulu has made but mine was already a factory pullers. Yes the puller that pulls against all 5 lug nut or lug bilt has a more even pull instead of pulling from three points which could be an uneven pull. If any one what a pictures of my plate puller send me you emaiol and I will send you the picture. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  14. There originally was a gasket that was on the top of the air horn. I can look up the number in my victor gasket catalog if you provide me with the car model and year. It had a taper to the gasket. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  15. The paper element need to be inside the original oil bath unit not on top of what you are showing in the picture. Measure the diameter of the opening with the lid off and also how high the lip is and then go on NAPA and do some searching for their napa gold air filters you might findsomething that will work. This is the research that you need to do since you have the oirigianl air cleaner. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  16. If you are referencing the mirrors that attached where the small trim is on the cowel section for the passenger and driver side of the car there has been several discussions on this sytle mirror. BAsically most people have said that they look great on the car BUT that they are an estic look for car and you can not really see anything with this style mirror. I have clip on style for my 39 Desoto which is not a convert and the passenger side mirror does help some but you have to adjust your postion in the front seat to get a good picture onthe right side. Rich HArtung
  17. Hey Don: Looks as if you got some southern frost onthe old PLymouth. Noticed the wooden block under the rear tyre are those Tenn hill too much for the old emergency brake. Just kidding. Thanks for the input. Rich Hartung
  18. Here is food for thought. Trivia for your thoughts On the 40's Desoto the left rear taillight had a bulb on the top of the lens. This bulb was painted a reflective silver color. The right side taillight did not have the bulb. So if you see the right taillight lens with the bulb then this in not correct. The left bulb was a warning to approaching cars at night time. Concerning refletors on a car. Why is it illegal to park a car facing forward on the opposite side of the road. So here is what i am saying you are going down the raod onthe right side of the road, here is the USA. There is a car parked on your side of the road but the front of the car is facing you. you see the headlights and grill. So during the day you can visually see the car. But at night time, think of this situation again. On the fron of car there really is not reflectors to identify you that you are approaching a car. The refelectors are basically built into the tail lightas and any other area inwhihch the manufacturer has added the reflective red. But inthe fron most car markers do not have any refelctive items and if they are any they would be white color. red is for the rears. Also the other reason it is illegal is that you would be crossing over against the traffic flow and can casue an accident. How many of our cars and trucks that are members currently own only have the outside door lock assembly on the drivers side door and ever notice that there is none on the driver side door. HAs anyone ever realized this. When our cars were being produced by state laws if was illegal to exit a car when it was paralled parked along the curb, The driver would then open his driver side door into the oncoming traffic and then would also be stepping out of the car into the oncoming traffic. So therefore they did not put a keylock assembkly on the driver side. You had to slide acorss the front seat and then exit on the passenger side of the car and then lock the car door. I have heard that this law is stillon the books in some states but have not taken the time to fully findout if it is on the books in PA.
  19. Here are the pictures of the original door panels on my 1939 Desoto that has the lower section covered in Hogs hair and also the foot rest on the back of the front seat. the file is too large to upload but if you send me you home email then I can attach and send to you. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  20. Don: Did you ever attend the Das Awskfest that is held in August of every year also in Macungie for the car show. They have over 2000 cars on Sat/Sun but it can get realy sticky with the humidity up here in PA. HAve been attend for the past 25 years. Hartung
  21. Don: do you have any manufactures make or carpet number that you can provide. Hirsh is the only supplier that i currently know that has the brown hogshair material and from the samples that I have gotten from him the material seels to be very thick to sew onto the door panels. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  22. On the 39 Cars and I had a 39 Dodge and currently have a 39 Desoto the bottom lower part of the door about 3 inches wide would have had a hogshair matierial at the bottom to protect the door as a kick panel. Then the rest of the door panel would have been material, mostly a plain color mohair or broadcloth. I still have the original interior in my 39 Desoto and the 39 Dodge that I had also had the same setup. Also on the rear doors the same thing and the foot rest at the bottom of the fron seat would also have the same hogshair material. it is a very stiff material and rouch. I can take pictures if anyone is interested. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  23. Shel_ny: When i posted my reply the pictures of the coil and that post was not showing for me. Is is strange that at a certain point the stoped the armored able and then went back to it. Could it have been when they moved the coil from not being attached to the firewall and then had it mounted onto the sparkplug wire loom seperator? I do know that when the coil was in the firewall there was a thought that the extra length of the wire to the dizzy was giving them some issues. Rich
  24. MIke The armor cabled wire runs from the iginition switch to the back of the firewal. There should also be a metal cover that has four tabs on it. the Coil then was monteed thru the firewall and bolted to the inside of the engine compartment. The wire then is screwed into the back of the coil and thenthe metal cover is snapped into place on the back of the coil. Not sure if you knew this information. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  25. you can also use a number 4 drill bit or go to a bicycle store that sell bicycle spokes. Get one that fits throught the hole with a tight fit and make you own tool and keep one inyour car and one in your tool box. I did this before I got the original tool kit for the sisson choke.
