  1. Is this a tool, or a big honkin' machine? I spent many months cleaning and repairing this sad, abused boat anchor. Before: After: Next project, whack together a sturdy bench for the South Bend on the floor, and I will be truly dangerous.

  2. Good day all I am in Raleigh NC today. Drove there this weekend. 1440 miles from my house to the hotel, work reasons. Some observations. Louisiana needs to do something about their roads in Shreveport, horrible. MS, AL, GA have nice roads, nice rest stops (Hello Texas pay attention) and really friendly people at the TC gas stations, clean bathrooms too. I usually avoid large gatherings like at Buc-ees, no thank you. SC and NC have decent roads too, but damn do something about that 55 mph limit y'all have. No one obeys it. Made the trip in my company truck, 2019 Silverado 2500, 4x4 long bed. Yep a tank. Nary an issue and I probably just jinxed myself, lol. Class is done on Wednesday, going to see my youngest daughter down in Fayetteville and head back Thursday, most likely. 21 hours of driving and one night of sleeping, at a rest top in Alabama, clean bathroom there as well. Thankfully I have a big ol' truck to sleep in, I actually got 6 hours of sleep, lol. At my age that's almost the same as sleeping like a teenager.

  3. I flew into Raleigh last week for work and drove Raleigh, Laurinburg, Hamlet, and Raleigh. Yes, nice roads and the 55 has to go. My sister lives in Lousy-ana and will agree with you 100% about the roads. I can't say much about the rest stops or gas stations because anything over 500 miles or a 10 hour drive from Chicago usually becomes an airline flight. I did 84 of those last year and my 15th flight for this year is this afternoon. Working outside in downtown Denver, where the scent of weed is strong, tomorrow and Wednesday. Eight more weeks of that crap and I'm retired.

  9. I think Tony did a fair job explaining it here. I think it is pretty accurate and explains what & why we do what we do. Just explaining why we are trying to get the perfect burn on the plugs. Seriously, if just going out for Hot dogs. coffee, Ice cream .... Nobody cares how clean your plugs are running. @Bryan This older video gives a pretty good explanation about it ... He later in 2022 did a video specifically on this engine & why he was changing what he did. You can find it if interested. @48 New Yorkeryou are not asking something foreign, kinda a thing all car guys go through and deal with different options.

  10. Too late, I done did the wild thing with the brushes. Yep, I use the CRC also..have about 12 cans of it. Works good but now and then I get a can that runs out of propellant with the can about 1/4 left.

  11. If you're finding remnants of the brass bristles, you might consider buying a brush kit made specifically for engine cleaning. I bought one made by Moroso (I think) and bought it off Amazon (I think). I seem to recall it was about $40, and it had quite a variety of brush diameters and lengths and they are all very stiff, scratchy brushes made for scraping off crud. I haven't cleaned my block yet, but I've cleaned quite a few other parts and haven't noticed any bristles coming off. As for solvents to use, I bought a couple of gallons of mineral spirits, which I will use to clean my block, and I also have used a LOT of brake parts cleaner on a variety of engine parts and other parts. I like the CRC Brakleen, as it is not flammable and doesn't evaporate as quickly as others, which means I don't have to continually spray it onto/into whatever I'm cleaning to make up for what's evaporating, and it makes it less prone to chilling the parts and producing condensation, which can cause flash rust. I believe they even sell the stuff in large buckets that are more economical and keep you from having to buy it as often.

  14. Just a guess, but the operating temp may be lower on those two since one side is not touching another cylinder..

  18. One trick for removing old fasteners is to tighten it a bit first, then loosen it up. Just be patient and if you have a torch a little spot heat around the fitting might help too. One thing I like to do to prevent future issues with this sort of thing is to put a wrap or two of teflon tape on the fitting. It will prevent future seizures.

  19. To bring some closure to this thread.... Packed the bearings with marine grease (because I had it on hand).... Had to get new wheel cylinders for the rears. Luckily NAPA had them within a day! Centric makes these now. Also had to make new lines between the cylinders. Very important to make sure that the line is clear of the rivets on the back side of the hub/drum assembly. The new spare. My tire guy got me this Hankook for $65.
