  1. There will be members with Dodges replying soon but I can offer some thoughts. Do not pull the dash.......that is hunting quail with a bazooka...... The switch on the floor is the headlight dimmer switch. If your car is like my '48 Plymouth the starter switch is the button on the left end of the dash. You REALLY need a service manual (and also a 6v test light) with a wiring schematic, otherwise you are making this harder than necessary. With a test light and schematic you start at the battery and start tracing the wiring through the starter and ignition circuits. This will give you the opportunity to check for damaged wires and connections and also gain knowledge of how your car is wired.

  2. Removing the fluid drive on my 51' yesterday which is now slowly becoming a parts car. 5/8" wrench was too big, 9/16" too small so I tried 15mm. nope, too small. Dad chimes in "maybe its 19/32's". Me: "Okay (eyeroll), yeah right, do they even make those?" Dad: *proceeds to pull out this 19/32's - 11/16 wrench. Me: ? and of course it was the right size....

  3. What I learned from watching the Ken Burns series on Country Music was that Kris wrote a boatload of the best songs ever written that were covered by Johnny Cash,Charlie Pride,Janis Joplin and a bunch of others singers. He was basically considered the Shakespeare of country music and I think he sings his own songs better than anyone that ever had a hit covering one of his songs. Quite an amazing life story too.

  4. Conn47D24, congratulations on your car... it looks great. I working on my door glass right now and noticed you referenced 41 Plymouth Mark's videos. Do you know where I can find these videos? Thanks. Dave

  5. So I just received an email from Tanks Inc confirming their product does fit... contrary to the advice they gave me the other day on the phone when they said it wouldn't. They also advised me to buy it from Summit Racing as they have better shipping rates. https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/fuel-tanks?fr=part-type&SortBy=BestKeywordMatch&SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=TNK-48DP-A So I did. With a 6v sending unit and shipping to the UK it came to $438 - although I can expect a $130 duty charge when it lands. If it all works out I'll be happy with that. Fingers crossed...

  6. Los_Control you give a good summary of how to use muriatic acid. It is also good for cleaning bore stains off paths and brickwork, but is better diluted with an equal quantity of water. Concentrated 85% phosphoric acid is nasty stuff. I have researched it and dilute it to 20% strength and add a small amount of dish washing detergent. It gives a stable grey coating to bare metal and I believe it was used by Chrysler to prepare panels for painting, as have seen the same finish when stripping paint from my panels. It can also be purchased from hardware or auto stores in diluted form labelled as a rust remover, with a price markup of about 1000%, which is why I make my own.

  9. I’m not sure why, but a lot of the pictures I take of my cars are from the back. The back end of the car has had as much effort put into its design as the front as far as I’m concerned. I also like the front wheels turned somewhat most of the time. Couple of examples shown taken today. What's your favourite viewing angle? Also made a new friend today. He’s a pure bred border collie owned by a fellow I met who stopped to look at the car.

  10. I just scored a new car I’ve wanted for a very long time. This car has 37,400 miles on it! It’s about as original as it could be too. One thing I am amazed about is it doesn’t wander at all. There are a few things I’d like to perfect but I am not going to go overboard. A paint job and minor body repair to prevent rust is the biggest item on my list. I’ve been driving every day and it starts and runs like a near new 49 Plymouth.

  11. Motors should be in everyone’s library who has an old car. A re-printing of this volume would be in order. It often outshines my shop manual.

  12. Hit a show in Springfield Ohio today. I tell you what, I saw one spitfire head but other than that flat 6 parts and our era dodge parts were non existent. Tons of parts and about 50 cars for sale but 90% chevy small block and Ford. Disappointing but managed to pick up two manuals for a good price. Both 1950 to supplement my factory manual. Love the smell of that old paper. Did see a 1922 and earlier carb book that was pretty cool but nothing I could use... Edit: the best thing about original manuals besides the smell is the pictures and text are absolutely crystal clear. None of that photocopied blurry bullpucky.
