  1. So, i got my 51 Fargo to the point where i could get a safety inspection and get it on the road. It was last insured in 1965 to my knowledge. I havent taken it out on the highway til i was on my way for inspection. Will it even make it?? It did,and passed inspection. So, off for a cruise around town. I have never had something like this to cruise around,so its all new to me. Cold dreary day, never imagined it would bring joy to so many people seeing it drive by. Its a little difficult to drive, but its getting easier, and i really enjoy it. i have driven lots of street rods and classics, but never something i owned. Its truly a different experience. a sense of pride, maybe? so, to those of you in my situation, project to finish and wondering what its going to be like, its awesome! And thanks to you guys here on the forum, providing information and advice to make my vision a reality!

  2. Freeing stuck valves in DEFINITELY not a process you want to get in a hurry with. Sometimes I think all young men need to work on old cars or trucks that have been sitting for decades because it would give them the lessons in patience they so desperately need. I honestly think that learning to be patient might be the most important value to learn early in life. It sure would cut back on a lot of the anger and frustration that afflicts the young.

  3. I had a 54 ford when I was a teenager. Got that car for 25 bucks. After awhile it had a knock. So I jacked it up in the driveway, pulled the pan and replaced the bearings. When I got it running again the knock was still there. Turns out the knock was the exhaust pipe hitting the frame. After awhile the engine really started to knock. My repairs ruined that engine. Keep in mind that I was 16 and I did most of my work with a screw driver, a hammer and a pair of pliers. I have the proper tools now. We live and learn.

  4. Today I rounded up some steel and hardware. I went to see my hobby-machinist friend. We tag-teamed a bit to build this con-rod vise. It should allow me to install, torque and crush the rod bearings. Then measure bearing to crank journal clearances. Fairly accurately I think. Better than plasti-gauge I think? It was a fun project. Bonus working with my buddy too.

  5. My core 230 had some stuck valves, I pulled the head, soaked the stems down and let them set, occasionally I'd roll the engine over and whack the stuck valves with a soft faced hammer then soak them again. Took maybe a month and they were all free.

  6. i get about 1 gallon of syrup per 50 gallons of sap. people with south/west aspect orchards get closer to 35 to 40 to 1 [sap/syrup]. this year, i made about 10 gallons of syrup. so, around 500 gallons of sap for that, plus what was in the pans but not syrup at the end (and i dumped about 75 gallons from the tanks without collecting). probably 650 to 700 gallons of sap. over the 40+ years i've done it, i've averaged about 15 gallons of syrup per year. best year was 1992, with 31 gallons of syrup. depending on the year, i put in from 130 to 225 taps (roughly 90 to 175 trees).

  9. MMO has directions that will tell you how much per gallon to use. Went and looked it up, 4oz per 10 gallons. https://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/faqs/

  10. I use one in my '39. Tops of my valves stay clean with it. I think it works but if it happens to actually just be BS it is definitely a conversation piece at shows. Gets a lot of attention. I can also turn it way up to blow smoke on Teslas and Priuses.

  12. All three of my medium duty trucks (GA, HH) have the same setup you took off. From what I can tell, the Radiator for the 25” motors are thicker than the ones for the 23” My 1/2- 1ton trucks, have what the illustration shows and it sounds like what DCM sold you

  15. @Plymouthy Adams I want to apologize, I was to quick and didn't take time to download the upside down photo, which clearly is from a official Plymouth manual. Difficult to read but it states the 7 position. This must have been done sometimes in the 1950s as there is no mention of it in earlier manuals. I wanted proof and you delivered. ☺️ I do hope moderator will not lock this thread. Thank you.

  16. I don't get these things at all. They advertise a TOP CYLINDER LUBRICATORS. Ok on an old stove bolt or Buick ohv engines ther might have been a benefit to additional lube to those spindly rockers and valve guides and seals. But what is there in a flat head that requires lubrication??? After the intake charge is lit off it's what smoke??? Does smoke lubricate anything. Some guys say it keeps the engine from burning oil! How? By adding a perfumed colored oil that gets burned instead. It like saying I don't want any alcohol in my gas then putting a bottle of two of "dry" gas in the tank. The ingredients of MMO are Petroleum distillate. aka oil Stodard solvent (an industrial solvent used to clean machining lubricant from metal parts after they are machined and during production) Red dye. ( the color they put in ATF so you know what's leaking) Now this company wants you to introduce a vacuum leak connected to a glass jar with their version of oil, cleaner, color and lemony fresh odor... Can't see any possible benefit except your money going to a giant retail con jobs CEO.

  17. Brand new military surplus built by Chrysler Corp. in the mid 1960s. Still in the crate when I bought it. I have documentation. PCV yes, but no EGR. I will be posting more about it in the future. I need to determine if it will fit in my truck without major difficulty?

  18. that scan appears to have come straight out of a Motors repair manual as the source...it is very strange manner the fact that in the Motors manual under the Big three, Dodge, Chrysler, Desoto there is no mention of the 7 position...but if you flip to the working mans car section under Plymouth they state in my edition of MOTORS that from 1940-55 (book covers 1940-55) that to align to the 7 position also. All this fuss is not the fact that one can do as they wish and it will run aligned other, it is the denial it is in print that seems to be the issue. It seems to always be in the Plymouth book and not the other three. The D24 book I have is so lacking in details and such compared to my Plymouth book for same years. for the DT's I post this. Sorry but I could not get the file correct and save the rotated position....both scans clearly identified from Plymouth repair manual/section. And clearly even if this was added a bit later in the manual, these manuals were in print long before most of us were of age to walk much less drive. ..

  20. Thank you everyone for the best time of the year!!! I'll sort the pictures I have and post them soon. I was looking at Brent's (Brentb3b) burnout and realized there's no way to save it, so I took a few more pictures for my own memories of Gary. I'm working on a collage of past pictures to give his wife. She contacted me before the show and wished everyone a good time and wants to see the pictures of this BBQ. Ed......next trip to Minnesota, I'll hand the stainless steel grille bars over.....BUT you owe me a trip to the BBQ before there are no more!!!!!! Thanks to Kevin(Bluzhog53) for bringing the bitchin' ride he won....AND for the excellent sound system.....you are awesome, my friend! I have admired Charlie's(51Hemi) truck for years. He shows up just about every year and helps knock out the tough stuff weeks before the BBQ. After so many years of being a true friend, it was time to crown his truck "Best Of Show"!!! and yeah, its got a Hemi"! Jim Shepard (Jim Shepard) is the best. He's been a good friend for so long and really the first contact I had with a real Pilot House Era truck. And the long distant travelers.....Oregon, Minnesota, Southern Cal, Nevada....and any I missed. You guys humble me, thank you. I'm just getting older and richer with all my truck buddies.....I appreciate you all. The plan my wife and I agreed to is, 20 BBQ's......there will be only 6 more Tailgate BBQ's! Hope to see you at one soon! Tim aka 48Dodger

  22. It might be interesting to propose that to one of the manufacturers? A medium sized one that makes these ring and pinion gears similar to the one mentioned recently for making pistons. They might be receptive... and see a market opportunity.

  23. Chrysler1941 I stand corrected Sir, did not realize that had seen some ring and pinions on the net for 8 1/4" Mopar rear axles just assumed that applied to these.

  25. Excuse me for being a old carpenter & not a mechanic, & lazy for not going back and read previous post. My 2 cents. A knock is not good. At idle & goes away, kinda makes me wonder if it is wrist pin issues? A engine gasket set cost about $100 a few years ago, with today's inflation may be more now. If it was a wrist pin, it will be digging into the cylinder wall and leaving scars. Will be obvious the issue with the head removed. Your oil pressure sounds good which makes you think your bearings are good. If you got piston slap because of worn wrist pins. When is it too late? Can you just slap a old used piston in there to replace the bad one? These old girls learned some tricks along the years .... Will cost you $100 to peek inside , may cost you more if you do not peek.

  26. Wondering if a mechanical stethoscope help nail down where the knock is coming from? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lil-52500?seid=srese1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1PSDBhDbARIsAPeTqrdH41efySqXjt6IIZThpWmVWjClMXPYJKo86ZgqgfLjpHhxT466KPcaAohYEALw_wcB

  27. Well, my landscaping, was remains and what was, was setup by my ex. Set up to be as hard to mow around as possible, apparently. So I will probably yank it all out and throw down grass seed. I do plant to build some planter boxes in front of the house where she had many monster sage brush planted, wood chipper to the rescue.

  28. I am just laughing at myself this year. Pretty sure whatever I manage to grow this year will be bird food. I have had gardens in the past, takes time to cultivate them & build them up. I planted some things 2 weeks ago, still kinda cool weather in the mornings ... left over seeds from last year, really not doing great. Couple tomato plants doing well. Tomorrow I need to go to town and do the walmart shopping, then stop by the lumber store & tractor supply ... all day event They all sell plants See what we end up with tomorrow. My main goal this year is to get the "garden center" built. I have the post in for the 8' x 16' fenced area. Tomorrow pickup the lumber for the attached 8' x 16' covered area. A 16' x 16' area total to organize all the crap I do not want in my garage. Where I moved the boxes this year, much better sunlight first thing in the morning to mid afternoon. I will trim the tree as I need for light to the garden. A little shade at 4:00 pm may not be bad when it is 100+ temps out. I will run water & power to the shed, I will run a 3' wire fence off of it & enclose the garden which allows me to run a bird netting overhead. Enclose a area and not a single garden bed. I can have a combo of in ground & raised beds, irrigation on a timer ... I can be lazy. This year is kinda just playing carpenter to get where the gardener wants to be. Yes I have a junk riding mower to hide. A friend had it & gave it to me. Said it ran really well but did not cut worth a crap. Been sitting a couple years and need to go through it to get it started .... When I loaded it up I looked, the blades are just as sharp as new & installed upside down. Just no time to work on it yet. A guy just needs a place to hide all the manure, fertilizer different soils flathead engines/transmissions. This year my garden will not be great, sure looking forward to next year

  29. Thought I'd share my Indestro tool collection. I started collecting old American made tools recently and Indestro is one of my favorites, along with Plomb & Proto. The wrench set I just picked up yesterday for $12, with the box and only missing one wrench (a 25/32 x 7/8 I believe).

My neighbors look at us like we are crazy...we love nature and all the bugs and bees that go along with it...so I am the neighbor that is looked upon as a wacko...we always leave huge patches to grow...and believe it or not...mother nature gives us color all season long...the bees and bugs love our place...no toxins used at all at our place... these are from a couple of summers ago now...
