  4. it is also not uncommon for a few drops to accumulate beneath/about a head bolt going into the water chambers. These often seal themselves in a bit and as there is no pressure on the system there should not be any concern of lots of coolant loss. The head gasket should seal the water from the combustion chamber completely so you should not have to be overly concerned here, do not forget to torque the head after a good run at temp....monitoring the engine till it basically seals itself with a few heat cycles is the norm. Head studs are more prone to this mounting hole weeping over bolts but both are subject.

  5. I would recommend draining the coolant before pulling any head bolts, otherwise you'll have a mess. Also, you shouldn't need any sealant under the bolt heads. If the threads seal properly the coolant wouldn't get up that high. Also, some of the smoke at initial start up could have been assembly oils and such burning off.

  6. I used there tank on my 48 D24. No problems at all. I'm happy with it. Personally, if a new tank is available, my opinion is to put in a new tank. The protective coating (zinc, galvanized) has surely been compromised on an old tank. My old tank was coated by previous owner with some aftermarket product but still continued to rust and was very nasty when I replaced it.

  8. “Edelbrock Racing” mats over here. I bought two of them. One for each side. It has a grippy back side that holds it in place very well. The bolt-on front fender styling of pre 1942(?) allows for easy mat placement. I take the engine side-covers off and get great access. The fender mat works well as I place many tools on it. However it did take about three months for the chemicals used to make it, to flash off. It smelled, but its all good now. In BC Canada we have a chain of stores called KMS Tools. I bought the fender mats there.

  10. I honestly like the countersink idea better. It wont weaken it as much as you would think. you may want to consider socket head cap screws, usually much tougher than grade 8, and require less room than a 9/16” hex. Would be my choice.

I'd be hesitant to modify the MC casting, but the spacer can be modified to notch over the casting so that it rests on the adapter and the MC flange, while the bolt head contacts the other end of the spacer...you could possibly make 45° cuts on the bottom corners of the adapter to fabricate spacers out of since those areas are beyond the adapter clamping area...I have made some adapters similar to this and made spacers out of flat washers that were clipped by grinding on one side so they looked C-shaped, stacked the spacer washers for clearance, then put a full flat washer on top of that stack for bolt head contact...I've even used modified hex nuts as spacers that were the next size up from the bolt used, those worked well and could be easily replaced if necessary

  12. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cal-75809/overview/ Just one idea as I have no idea of his bolt pattern on the rear end. Various thicknesses and bolt patterns are available. I do not thick I would go that wide or even 1" spacers with only long studs and not this type that has bolts holding spacer on with studs protruding from the spacer for the wheel, but that's My opinion for My car only. Not sure how thick anyone makes a spacer that is not of this type. I Saw up to 1/2", but maybe thicker is available?? DJ

  14. I don’t recall them being overly expensive. Maybe $25-$30 each... Shop around. There are many places that offer them in different thickness and bolt patterns. Or, like DJ said, you could always shorten up your studs.

  19. Hey all, Just getting around to responding here. Glad to see the early positive responses. We had a fantastic time last year (and several years in the past) gathering a ragtag group of folks that have reported having a good time following us around New York and New England on our past tours. This year we are really hopeful to up our participation and are planning a real cool itinerary for three days of fun and touring. I'd really appreciate it if you could all send me an email - mark@rdusaclassics.com - so I can add you to my email list. Having a real gauge of participation will help us size the Friday / Saturday hotel appropriately. As soon as we have some finalized plans are locked down I will send them out so folks can start planning. In general you can expect the following; Thursday Sep 17 - Muster point in or nearby Bolton Massachusetts for cars that want to arrive early. Lodging at our local Boxborough Host Hotel is nearby our planned first stop, clean, and not expensive. https://www.boxbororegency.com for those that want to get in Wednesday or sooner. Once we have folks collected, we will head to the Collings Foundation in Stow Massachusetts for a tour of their new museum, and potentially a tour of the owners personal multi-million dollar brass era collection. After the tour we will drive secondary roads south about an hour to our weekend hotel and get situated. We will be targeting a hotel location in the Fall River / New Bedford area of Massachusetts, but will adjust that based upon hotel negotiations and further tour stops. Anyone wishing to arrive earlier in the week would be welcome, we can help facilitate local sights and services. Friday Sep 18 - We will start the day with breakfast at the hotel, and head off New Bedford at noon. Friday afternoon we may try to organize a tour through the "cottages" of Newport Rhode Island. We will reassemble at the hotel around 4:30 to greet new arrivals and kick off our PICNIC. In true fashion we invite participants to bring a little something their home to share, we will facilitate with a BBQ grille, utensils, plates, cups etc. Lawn chairs, Libations and good humor are a must. Saturday Sep 19 - After breakfast we will head to Battleship Cove and a self guided tour the USS Massachusetts in nearby Fall River MA. Should make for a real nice backdrop if we are able to get the cars/owners lined up for a group photo. We will reserve the afternoon for some driving in the picturesque town of New Bedford where our goal will be to see sights and potentially tour the whaling museum. Early evening will find us headed to a local restaurant in hopes of tasting some of the local fare. We will arrange for a group fixed price meal and hopefully get us all into one room. Stay tuned for more info. Sunday Sep 20 - Sunday morning we will wrap up at the hotel and head our Plymouth's to Plymouth in hopes of gathering our cars at the 1620 rock for a memorable photo or two. Plymouth recently enhanced their on street parking lot along the oceanfront and it is a handy walk to all the shops and tourist stuff along Water Street. From this point the itinerary is turned back to our participants and you are free to tour the area and head home at will. We expect to be wrapped up by noon, however local restaurants are plentiful and good. So that's it for the moment - locals please chime in if there's a stop that we should consider along the route or potentiall pre/post tour. all the best, Mark

  23. Thanks Frank, yes he's come a long way, and we're starting to think we may actually get it done this school year. But for the record, he still hasn't changed out that second u-joint on the drive shaft and has some fuzzy logic about why we should just leave it alone ? Funny thing, he may be right. Joe, he may need some extra spending money in college coming here faster than I care to think. Maybe he'll keep that in mind.

  27. I did not want to high jack Marks TODD build thread so I thought I would start my own. Talking about engineering flaws, I rented a JLG lift for a month few months and they have the exhaust blowing at the operator. It’s not only noisy, it’s annoying as hell with the smoke blowing towards you. I looked at it and took out three bolts and rotated it. It’s only being held by two of the three bolts but now it blows away from the operator. What were they thinking??

  30. YEEEHAWWW!!!!!! lol.....what a blast! had the best time ever. I'm pretty happy to have a place to share the experience too. Bob was a great driver and he and his brother Earl made great pit crew members. Next year Earl wants to drive too. The best moment was watching my son take the wheel. He really is my best friend and to be able to share that moment on the track, meant an awlful lot to me. Thanks guys for the kind words. Nice to have friends who get how fun these trucks are. 48D
