  2. No, don't butcher it up into some kind of camper. It has a need to stay as is and be used as such.

  4. Wayfarer.....we had a similar situation here in Oz from the late 30's thru to the late 50's in that Oz cars used both short and long engines even in the same year..........lol.........my 1940 Dodge originally had the 23" 201 engine but then for 1941 both engines are listed depending on the car serial number.......then of course in the late 50's in the Oz designed 1957 AP1 Chrysler Royal it depended on whether you ordered a standard trans, overdrive trans or Powerflite auto behind the six then you appear to have been given one or the other 230 short or 250 long six........at least if you ordered the V8 Poly then you got no choice, just the Powerflite auto.........I won't mention that I have both the 301 AND 313 Poly listed as the engine for 1957 to 1959 although the difference is just the bore..........yep, mother mopar did some strange things........and heres a couple of pics of my 1940 D15D Oz Dodge Sedan.........Plymouth body & chassis length, fenders, head & taillights, hood & bumpers.....Dodge grille, badges & RHD dash......but ever seen a 1940 Dodge or Plymouth with a rear centre armrest?......lol......the hotrod bits, ie, 318 Poly etc are my doing but the rest is Oz mother mopar........regards, andyd

  7. Many years ago, I had a weak cylinder at 72,000 miles in my '53 Plymouth. Pulled the head and had a burnt valve. A mechanic friend and I pulled the pistons after removing a slight ridge, honed the cylinders, re-ringed the pistons, replaced the burnt valve, and ground the other valves and lapped the valve seats. I did not replace the rod and main bearings as they were plastigauged and were right in the middle of factory specs. Oil pressure was at 55PSI at speed and never below 40PSI at hot idle. The car now has nearly 101,000 miles, does not burn oil, and maintains the same excellent oil pressure. Maybe I have been lucky but that is my story on a partial rebuild.

  8. You could do what you are planning but by 90 000 miles, there will be a fair amount of taper in the cylinders and the timing chain will also need replacement. A valve job alone may result in more oil consumption due to higher vacuum in the cylinders on decelleration. Lots of these cars received in-car overhauls back in the day and the results were often satisfactory but relatively short lived due to wear which was not addressed. Assess how much you are going to use the car in the next ten years and consider that parts are relatively easy to get now but the supply will ultimately dry up.

  9. TOOLBOX ARSENAL: Not to start a spitting contest, but I recently had a friend gripe at me for taking too long to get things fixed...so I took a few pics to make a point. To replace the ball joints and control arm bushings on the QuadCab, it took all of these tools (plus a drill press), and about 20 hours of labor...these two pics made a big mouth whiner shuddup for a change

  10. May I just throw another wrinkle into this?...IMO all kits out there are not created equally. Some are much better than others. I started off with a kit from Napa.....then somewhere else.....for my money Roberts sold the best quality rebuild kit. Included stuff that others did not. Jeff

  11. Suggest you also contact George Asche. His contact information can be found in the links section of this web page. He was able to help me out when I needed a rod bolt replacement.

  12. Thanks all for the advice and information. I'm in the process of buying washers from the companies mentioned. I already decided to replace the nuts so hopefully they'll arrive and I'll get to fire this rascal up.

  15. Can't believe this one took so long. There's a few around here, and one is just up the street from me, but no place to stop and get a picture of it. So while out driving around with the Ol' Dodge today we stopped at a local park where my wife knew of one. But again, no good place to park and get a picture. This is the best I could do... How about some nice fall color with your old Mopar...
