Anybody use the Steele rubber windshield gasket on a 1954?

Recommended Posts

My 54 3/4 ton needs a windshield gasket pretty badly, and also a windshield.

Steele rubber sells the gasket and Auto City Classic sells the glass but I would love to hear if anybody has experience with these products.

The search function here is really hard to use sometimes but I didn’t find anything despite several boolean configurations and forum/title specific searches. Apologies if this is a much discussed topic and I failed to find good info that’s already here.

thanks!

I planned on doing a 2 piece gasket like mine had, but I'm still interested in the glass cost/fit.  Especially since I'm a good year behind you in progress.

The gasket on mine is the type that grabs the glass and pinch weld with rubber channels then tightens up with a locking strip worked into a groove on the front.

You wouldn’t know it to look at it though- these days it looks more like an antique fishtank that is only good for a lizard terrarium because it won’t hold water despite a whole tube of silicone artfully applied by a drunk kindergartener.

The glass and seal are spendy to buy all at once. I might order a seal and see if it looks like it’ll fit, then order glass or see if mine’ll buff out.

We had a chip develop into a crack we pulled it a few weeks ago.  Hoping I can still salvage it in the future when everything else is done, and just use it as a temp till a replacement can be located and installed.  That is one thing, I'm liking about the 2 piece locking strip ours came with is it maybe reusable if needed.

Any decent glass shop will cut you a windshield if you take in the old one as a template. Assuming it is flat glass as it is two piece. Way cheaper locally than ordering glass elsewhere. That's my experience anyway.

54 trucks are the first year for a 1 piece curved glass and it was only used for 54 and early 55s. After that it wrapped around further.

If that is the case, I stand corrected.

Yeah if you look at a 54 there is no center rib in the glass and tbe corners wrap. Then in 55 it wraps around so much farther that it radically changes the shape of the door.

If I had a 53 with two flat planes I would have made the cab a couple inches shorter they are so easy to chop.

Have you, or anyone, considered or used the generic gasket material that Rock Auto and others sell.  most sellers get $3-4/ft for this stuff.  Looks just like it fits the pinch weld and glass like the original.  And, you can get it with a lock strip which is a lot easier to install that the oil string in the groove trick.  \

Just not sure of the corner fitting and sealing the seam.  The seam can probably be handled with urethane if the material bends into the corners well.
