The Windward 48 dodge survivor

Thanks! The car photographs with my phone and lot better then it looks in person. There's areas where the paint has chipped and surface rust, the chrome is showing a good bit of age.....the roof has a dent....but I'm going to drive, maintain and enjoy it the way it is. Reading others post like Worden 18 has got me inspired to drive it more often then I do. Here's a b&w in front of some homes built in the late 20's or at least the brick one.

Ok, now the present. The car has 4.11 gears and I don't like driving it over about 52mph, the engine seams to be reving higher than I'd like. By reading on this forum, it should take it just fine but I'd like to put more hwy friendly gears in it. Kinda hard to take out perfectly quite rear with new brakes and a driveshaft that has no vibration, although the front boot tore since the last time I had it on the lift.

I got a mopar 8-3/4 from a b-body, put 3.55 gears in it, all new differential and pinion bearings and seals. Fit great! Ordered a driveshaft from driveshaft specialist in TX. They seam to know exactly what I needed. I'm still waiting on the driveshaft and having withdrawals, the weather couldn't be better to cruise around in the 48 and mine won't go nowhere! Lol! Maybe it will be more enjoyable once it's going again....

Hi Dan. Wow you've had your 48 a while! I sometimes wish mine was a 4 door when we have someone or our dog with us. It's a little difficult getting in the back but once back there, very roomy abs comfortable. The carb I put on can be found all over the Internet for less then 100. A knock off of a Carter type YF originally used on Ford 250-300 straight 6. I had to cut the throttle linkage ball off since it was pressed like on and not removable. Then drill the hole just a little so the 48 throttle ball thingy would bolt on. I haven't even adjusted the idle, bolt it on and drive it. No problem with the fluid drive causing it to stall although I think I need to idle it up just a hair. I got a piece of 1/4" brake line to make the vaccum choke tube. The adapter for the breather is a piece of exhaust tube welded to an exhaust flare.

Thanks for the run-down.  Things that make you go "hmmm"...we're not having any issues at all with the original carb on our car, but I do happen to have one of them Carter YF carbs from an old Ford PU we used to have, aging in one of my parts boxes.

Still waiting for a driveshaft so I thought I'd tackle a couple small issues. One the seat wouldn't adjust fwd and back, found the rod was installed incorrectly. Had to take the seat up to fix but all good now. Also my fuel gauge would read about 5/8 full with the tank full then after burning off about 5 gallons, it was reading empty. Reading the service book, I should be able to adjust the gauge so I took the gauge out but it didn't match what was in the book. After searching this site, it appears sometime in 48 they went to a one wire fuel sending unit. The back of my gauge only has 2 post. I pulled the sending unit out and it's a aftermarket. Measured the resistance and it's a chevy type 33-250ish ohm's. I can only assume mine should read 73-10 ohm's since I can't find that information anywhere. I ordered a universal one, guess I'll find out when I install it.

Well I got the fuel sending unit in and the first line of the instructions say "for negative earth only". I'm puzzled! It's just a one wire sending unit. A variable resistor....... Why would it be polarity sensitive? That only thing I can figure is this company makes multiple sending units, some with 2 terminals and general instructions they ship with every unit. Anybody have any idea why a one wire sending unit should not work either positive or negative ground?

I got the shaft! Driveshaft that is. Took the dog and the wife for an evening drive and 3.55 gears is what should have come in this car from the factory! There's a noticeable difference in the rpm vs load vs speed. No longer feels like the engine is running too high of an rpm for the load it's under at crusin speed, and now can cruise around at 55 and 60. One thing is like to do is get an ratio adapter to correct the speedometer. Anybody know if it's typical 7/8-18 threads?

You might want to put some thicker battery cables on. Zero gauge are recommended, 00 better.

I've never noticed that! I think I'll do that..... thanks!

Been driving the car everywhere I can trying to burn the fuel out of it. Once I took the fuel sending unit out and got a look at the condition of the tank, along with the fine rust getting past 2 inline filters, I've ordered a new tank. Started another thread about what tank to buy but I got one on the way. I keep it close to full because the gauge never was right so I've got some fuel to burn.

All that to say this. I didn't want to buy a new tank, I've spent a lot of money on this car and wanted to limit the money I spent on it. This week I lost a class mate from high school. 50 years old. That will make you realize we're only here for a short time. Enjoy the time you have! The car makes me and the wife happy, my bills are paid and I can afford a tank.....why not spend money on what you get enjoyment out of.....My son rode with me to go get steaks to throw on the grill for mothers day, he likes the car to. Wants to drive it to work from time to time. I didn't take any pictures.....but I'm very pleased with the 3.55 gears.

Don't sweat too much the money spent on your car.  I spent twice as much to purchase my car than what it was worth and I stuck a whole mess of money into it. I could have bought a really nice car for what I have into it. but the experience thus far has been priceless with its original paint and interior and all of the people I have talked to just because of the car.  Just drive it and have fun. We don't know when our last day on Earth will be, but it could be here sooner than you think, so live it up!

After the steaks and an awsome mother's day, we topped it off with a ride down to the mouth of the bayou  (the wife's idea......awsome wife!) Overlooking the gulf of Mexico. the son driving and the dog ridin shotgun. The wife and I in the back. Got some pictures of the car as the sun set. One thing I did when wiring the turn signals/ running lights, I keep the original configuration of the running lights off with the headlights on.

Burnt some more fuel today, took the car on about a 80 mile round trip. Over to pascagoula beach for a car show. there was about 300 cars there. Live music, we had a blast. They parked us right by the stage. Left there and went to a cruise in mobile. I should be running on fumes now. I'll check in the morning and likely drain what's left, put in the new tank.

Got the old tank out and glad I decided to buy a new tank. Looks like at some point, the top was cut open, probably to clean, then epoxy back in place! Once drained I could get a better look inside and it was in worse shape then I thought. The inlet of the filter was almost clogged.

Cool thread. Somehow it’s eluded me until today. @Worden18 has it figured out. He’s bang-on.  Just recently for me, I struggled for three weeks about buying another old car I found. I “slept on it” 21 times. If by then you know you still want it, perhaps you should let down your inhibitions and go get it. Which I did.

I am a cautious slow learner it seems. Lol.  Life is ours to live. We work hard to get ahead. Whatever brings us joy. Do it if you can. I must have crossed the apex. I too feel I am now in the same place as Worden.

Thank goodness I've gotten through to somebody.  Been telling my wife the same things for 17 years now... she's just starting to understand.  I don't live in desperation thinking of my dying moment at all times.  But I'll be damned if I'm going to waste the time God has given me, especially since I've been here half a century already.  Drive, have fun, love your family and your neighbor, cherish the little things, get that ice cream at Dairy Queen, don't fret when your car gets a scratch in it.  Live.  Sorry I got off topic fellas, just wanted to throw in my 2 cents?

I discovered a clog too,...quite by accident.  RTV from a previous sending unit install,.....I think.  Dodged a bullet as it hadn't yet completely blocked the filter and left me stranded.

And a big "AMEN" to all who have expressed the attitude of "go for it if you're able",....you never know when the big guy might flip the switch.goober.thumb.jpg.7b3e30fb1847549f580748299c938427.jpg

Nice catch on that escaped silicone! Nightmares are made of that right there.

Many many years ago my boss told never, never use silicone on any gas or hydraulic line/ tanks etc. As it would turn to a big, big blob of  jello like substance and plug all sorts of stuff in that system. They had already learned that lesson the hard way- several times!!

I never forgot. Maybe they now make some New tech stuff that will not do that but why chance it.!

OP, I am jealous of that New-Old car at that price especially, LOVE it, I know I do!  ?

New tank installed, new sending unit is reading accurate. I checked it by knowing what it should read as I put x gallons in. I put about 2.5 gallons in to get to the fuel station then would stop pumping and check gauge and the gauge read as expected. Yesterday took the car to Dauphin Island for the annual car show. Plenty of shade, good time!
