Speedo is all over the place

Bought a '46 Plymouth Special Deluxe and have been slowly getting everything working properly. Hooked up the speedometer cable yesterday and it goes crazy (needle bounces all over). Does the cable need attention or is the gauge shot?

I just did mine last weekend.  Pulled the cable out of the car.   Removed the core.  Washed both in a Safety Kleen parts washer.  Dried them thoroughly and greased and reinstalled the core.  Once installed my speedo needle was smooth as silk.  It had been squeaking and bouncing the needle a bit.   Easy and darned near free save some effort...  ????

Hey Brandon

Welcome to the forum. In this pic look at the center piece. It is the speedo. At the center is a post looking piece pointing to 1'oclock. This is the lube point (using a lite weight oil 3in1, liquid wrench or so) in side is a felt wad which soaks up the oil and lubes the speedo. It just takes a few drops.

Jay Lee. I just saved your picture to my electrical page. That shows wires, cipolors, etc, TKS.  I will check that against my wiring.  Tomorrow I'm double checking all electrical before I lift my dash into place.
