bones44
I need to replace the water pump backing plate gasket and was wondering if someone could tell me what thickness of gasket material to use. I have contacted Fel-Pro and the only way you can get said gasket is purchase an overhaul kit. Will a thicker gasket alter the performance or flow of the w/p or is that not a factor? I can no problems with a slightly thicker gasket. Many leaks in that area are caused by an old rust pitted steel plate. It can cleaned well and covered with a good epoxy and carefully sanded flat again. A good sealer used (I prefer permatex sealer in the small tube-aviation I believe it's called) should seal it up for many years. Also use the sealer on all the bolts to the steel backing plate and the w/p to block. DJ
