I just got my 51 Plymouth Suburban home and noticed that the badge that says Plymouth on the front of the hood had plastic inserts for the lettering. Was this common?

yes.  but for 52 the letter bar was all metal.  big improvement in durability.

There is a sheet metal bar behind the plastic letters to hold them in-place against the chrome part of the nameplate.  I've seen them rust out and be ineffective.  If this is the case, you can pack rope caulk around the letters from the back to hold them in place.

I have one of these, it has a number of the letters still in place...there is no one single bar on this example but a number of clips that retain the letters....I have seen a couple attempts to highlight these opening with alternate methods of fabricated letters and of a solid filler....both stand out as just what they were, attempts.    The Mopars catalog I have on disc show the letters to be items 15-06-16 and the molding to be 15-25-2  However, this panel within the catalog does not address the letters or the clip in picture or description and only address the molding for year application and their cost at that time.

TODAY....I would think if a good set of letters were in one's hand, a 3D printer would be able to replicate these.   Who is going to be the man to corner this market....?
