Front spring removal

Recommended Posts

VERY Carefully !!

That spring can take your head off.

Special  tool, spring compressor  can be borrowed or rented.   Squeeze the spring that way and then remove the upper control arm bolt from the knuckle.

Slow and easy.  I had help on the first side then I tackled the other my self.

Take LOTS of photos of every step.  BIG help on rebuild.

Good luck.

Dave,

Frankly I had to " Modify " one.  I added the head of an old sledge hammer.  It fit across the base of the spring and took up the extra few inches of compression I needed.

It took a awhile to figure out. I tried 3 different tools before that.

Now there is another method that I've seen.  A floor jack under the lower control arm to compress the spring.  Seen it on youtube.  I would use a chain or heavy duty hoist  strap to hold the spring from jumping out.  Take a look online.

I just put a floor jack under the lca and took out the 4 bolts holding the uca to the frame.  Then just lower the jack and the spring comes out nice and easy.  Chaining it to the frame is a good move too.

Another easy way... the engine and front end need to be on the car for plenty of weight to do this job..

Doing one spring at a time..remove the tire....

Jack that corner up under the "A" pillar fairly high... 20" so the LCA can swing completely down and let the spring fall out..... support there with a good stout jack stand..

Remove the sway bar from both lower control arms..

Loosely chain or heavy strap the coil spring to the LCA for safety.. note the spring orientation to the LCA

Use a good quality large saddle floor jack under the LCA spring seat

Jack the LCA up carefully till the upper control arm rubber bumper is just off the frame

Remove the outboard  nut and pin from the LCA..

Carefully lower the LCA till the spring is loose and remove spring

Reverse procedure to install the spring.
