Mine took some scotch-bright pad cleaning and a strong drop-light to find under the layer of surface rust, but it was there

as rekbender points out with his photograph, the marks are there but disguised with rust over the ages for the most part, you will need to scour it well, paint the area then contrast color the lines so they show easily with the timing light.   Mine is very similar to his after a through cleaning and repaint...
