1951 fargo starter stuck

Recommended Posts

Key off, emergency brake off, transmission in 3rd gear, clutch out, get out of the vehicle and rock it back and forth until you hear the starter disengage from the flywheel. That should free up the starter. But the real problem is most likely worn gear teeth on the flywheel or on the starter motor.

Back in early '06, I had the clutch inside the starter on my '49 1-ton break off of the slide collar and it kinda did the same thing...I was so ignorant back then that I pulled the starter and took it back to the guy who had rebuilt it, who charged me 20 bucks to fix it a few days later as he was swamped as usual...he gave me back the busted parts, which I immediately recognized as something that I had in storage, read about it in the shop manual and realized I could have done the work myself in less than an hour...D'OH!!
