buddy123
My local garage is replacing the rear main seal in my Dodge D24. Transmission came out ok, clutch and fluid drive came out ok. Rear main seal top and bottom went smoothly. Problem has become replacing the fluid drive unit. They removed the clutch pressure plate and clutch plate off of the fluid drive. However, they are having trouble getting the fluid drive mounted back on the engine. It just doesn't seem to fit back in. Can't get the studs lined up to slide the unit back into place. Some part of the fluid drive unit seems to be blocked by the bell housing. Any thoughts? thanks guys
DJ194950
Well sound like they made a mistake by not marking the crank and fluid drive position together when removed. It only goes on in one particular position! the pattern is not even spaced all around and the difference is small and hard to see. Now they will have to try all possibilities to get it on. Sorry- been there, done that, never made that mistake again! ? DJ
Don Coatney
Probably a bit late but I used both center punch marks as well as a paint stick.
buddy123
Yup, that was it! That unevenly spaced pattern for the studs was not obvious at a quick glance. Thanks for the quick reply. Also, the old rear main seal was a neoprene type. It appeared to be worn and rock hard, but it did not have either a top or bottom gasket. I'm thinking that was the cause of the oil leak that made this whole repair necessary. thanks again
buddy123
One more question on this repair. Any tricks or tips to replacing the transmission. The fluid drive and clutch is back on , but the transmission does not seem to want to go into the fluid drive unit all the way. The transmission gets hung up about an inch from being completely inserted back in thanks
DonaldSmith
As with a typical standard transmission, there is a clutch disc, which as to be centered. Use a centering tool, which looks like a short broomstick, available in various diameters from car parts places, to center the disc as someone pushes down the clutch pedal. Or have someone push down the clutch pedal while moving the transmission the last inch. Edited June 19, 2018 by DonaldSmith typo
buddy123
Thank you Don, that was it. Push down on the clutch for the last inch.
DonaldSmith
Your local garage must have been certified for installing automatic transmissions, but they must have missed the class on standard transmissions.
