dip stick gasket

t   The dipstick on our’46 Plymouth looks like the bottom one Don has in his provided photograph, but it has the cup like the top one in the photograph. Hmmmm  . . . . . . .  I do know the engine in the car isn’t original, but I don’t know just what it’s from. It runs great, and that’s all I’m concerned with.

The 41 Plymouth I had used the longer style dipstick that fitted into a tube that was a press fit into the block, no idea if it was original tho' it certainly appeared so........I would think that the dipsticks would interchange so long as the longer one was used in conjunction with the tube, the short dipstick just fits into the block, no tube...........andyd

Well guys we are on a role here tonight I have learned another difference in the dipsticks. On my 48 P15 engine I have the one with the cup in fact both of my 48 cars has the same stick all though the one engine I got from Paul it seems that the stick hits the bottom of the pan just before it covers the end of the dipstick tube. I had no idea that there was such a difference in the length of the two. So which one is the right one to use?

First you will need to know if the readings are accurate . Try different sticks to find out ?  You could always start with an empty oil pan , ad the correct amount of oil , then see where it is on the stick .
