Wiring woes

Hi, 

 

I'm new here and my first time with a vintage chrysler so forgive me if I get things wrong.

 

I just bought a 48 windsor that had some wiring issues that I've been trying to figure out and some I've solved.

 

the only things that I haven't figured out is the horn and the wipers but I'll get to that. the major thing I'm having problems with is when I drive it it shifts nice but when I stop and try to pull away it stalls right out. I found some wires that led to the carb and from some pics I found I think that its to the kickdown but the terminals are broken on top. is there any way to fix it? The other problem is that there are two wires under the dash I have no idea where they go. when I run power to them, the spade one turns on the map lights and the bullet connector activates a relay under the hood. 

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard, these guys know their stuff...do you have a workshop manual?..............I'd be chasing one up if not, unfortunately all my stuff is for 1940/41 Dodge & Plymouth although 40yrs ago I did own a 1948 Chrysler Windsor.....these were never sold here in Oz, supposedly only a couple of dozen were imported for government use, I had mine for about  yrs and have no idea what happened to it..........these are the only 2 pics I have of it...........mine had the highlander tartan upholstery also.............regards, andyd

Hi...my experience chasing electrical problems by trial and error has been less than successful to say the least...the map light wire is probably disconnected from the main light switch...l could take some guesses on the bullet wire but it would be just that, a guess...follow the wire to see where it terminates...better yet, get a manual or at least a wiring diagram...life is easier with some instructions ... And as Andy said...welcome

Thanks. I have a manual but the wiring diagram is not as clear cut in trying to figure it out. the previous owner did somewhat of a hack job and I'm trying to put it back together. When I got it the dash lights, fog lamps, horn, wiper and brake lights were not working. I got everything except the horn and wipers working. Under the hood there was a set of wires that weren't connected to anything near the carb and I found a picture of where they are supposed to go. However as you can see from the pic, the terminals were jacked up and I have no idea what to do to repair or replace it. 

 

I think the bullet connector under the dash has something to do with the kick down on the transmission because when i put power to it you can hear the relay click on. but again, I'm going in pretty much blind lol and I'm wondering if that is one of the reasons it is stalling out. :(

None of the wiring under the dash is directly connected to the transmission wiring circuit. The transmission wiring harness is a completely separate engine compartment harness.

I have a 1946-48 Chrysler dash with the wiring still connected to it. I will look later this weekend.

The reason the relay clicks when you power up the red is it is back feeding voltage through the IGN switch making the trans relay energize.

There is a red wire bullet terminal wire that connects to the turn signal three wire connector close to the steering column.

Another red wire bullet  that goes to the wiper switch. Another red bullet terminal wire  that connects to the two terminal E-Brake switch on the hand brake.

As for that double red/yellow or brown U slot spade terminal....flasher or the map light switch ...Maybe... I'll have to look as the wiring changes slightly between 46 and eight both six and eight cylinder cars because of accessory options.

Nighshade.......re that bullet connector have you checked the light switch as I know the headlight, taillight and parking lights all use a bullet connector onto the light switch, well at least in 40/41 they do.........lol.........maybe I'm confusing the issue...............lol...............andyd

The single red bullet wire goes to the "X" terminal of the turn signal flasher. The factory Chrysler flasher has a circuit breaker conned to the "X" terminal of the factory installed flashers. The bullet red connects to this CB that's screwed to the "X" terminal of the factory flasher. See pics.

The dual red and brown open spade connector  connects to the "L" of the flasher.

The white wire is always connected to the "P' terminal+ Signal dash light.

I looked at an original dash out of a 48 Windsor parts car and my T&C with excellent original wiring to be sure of where your  two disconnected wires should go..

It's very common for the T/signal wires to end up cut or not connected because the original unique flasher type is hard to find and people screw up the wires to the flasher.

The terminals on the factory flasher use screws to attach the wires and circuit breaker.

 

As for the anti-stall solenoid on the carb...

A 16 ga. red wire from  the solenoid terminal on the trans relay connects to that anti-stall unit with a single bullet connector wire end.
