I know the problem is that there is no way to separate the plunger

Huh? What is "the plunger" inside your fuel pump? There is a rod that attaches to the center of the diaphragm, is that what you are writing about?

The fuel pump on my old Plymouth is fully rebuildable and you can get kits from Antique Auto Parts Cellar (a.k.a. Then and Now Automotive).

I know but how do I separate the plunger to replace the diaphragm

If I'm following correctly what you are talking about is part of the diaphragm and you'll get a new one in the kit
