homer41
I finally got the engines! I want some help trying to figure a year of manufacture for an engine. The nimber on the block is TDT 7215241, I smoothed it out and I can see that at least the. D and the second T have been offset double stamped, the first T may also be double stamped. All 7 numbers seem small and are not evenly spaced or in a straight line. I am convinced it has been restamped. Just above the oil pan there are some numbers 1-30 and directly above that is a 51. Could this be a 1951 engine? Would a number off the head help put this to a year? It is definitely a 218. It has a hand crank adapter on the harmonic balancer. It had a stromberg carb on it. Are there any other details that would put it at a certain year? The oil pan has a seperate shelf in the rear, the plymouth I have is wide open. The P-24 block has a main bearing cap out of round so now I have dismantled the Dodge. One good thing, the water distribution came out with a gentle pull, I could not believe it, and it looks pretty good shape. I found a small cylindrical piece in the most forward cam bearing oil passage.. It was about 1/4" dia and about 1/2" long and appears to have a hole through it. What is it, some sort of restrictor? since this engine is sort of an unknown and our state does not title off of the engine I was thinking of cleaning off the pad and stamping it with the original P-12 # for my car which I got from Chrysler. dpollo
The piece you found in the oil passage is an aftermarket item which restricts the oil to the camshaft thus raising the pressure in the system generally. They would be installed in a worn engine (in sets of 4.) The casting 1-30-51 implies that the block was cast January 30, 1951.
homer41
That casting number is different than the p-24, it has 1-15-53 all in a line this engine has it like this 51 1-30 Dave
homer41
I spent about 4 hours today trying to remove sludge from the cooling jacket of the engine, I will bet I removed at least a gallon of crud and I most certainly did not get it all. My next step will try to get water from my neighbors pressure washer and really give it a blast. Dave

dpollo
I found a set at a swap meet. I do not think anyone currently offers such an item.
homer41
What I pulled out looks like a piece of 1/4" steel rod with a small (maybe 1/16" ) hole drilled in it, it was not even centered. Is there a spec of what should be there? Dave
