I am rebuilding either a 53 218 or a 41-42 dodge 230. I have a manual for a 41 that does not get it. For example it says put a ring in cylinder and check gap, but no spec for the gap! I want a good comprehensive  rebuild manual.  Please stear me to a good manual.   Dave

I’d get a 53 manual since you have the older one. However, I doubt there is much different from one year to another. Maybe torque specs on fasteners. Generally speaking ring gaps are .004” for every inch of piston diameter - so for a 4.00 inch bore = .016” minimum up to something like .020 or .024 my depending on the piston and engine. Bearing clearances are .001” to .0025” as well, middle of the range is usually the target.

the basics of building this engine is that of most other, adherence to specs and weights.  I am not sure what manual you have but my D19-D22-D24 factory books has the very spec you say is missing.  As stated above,  procedure is X-X-X but the specs are Y-Y-Y and Y data is found in one section and crossed to the procedure in the narrative of the manual.  If it is any consolation, I have found the Plymouth manual for the same years to be a sight more useful to the hands-on owner.
