R7 overdrive

jumping out of second is not an overdrive problem, the trouble will be found in the main box in the syncro unit or the bearing between the input shaft and the mainshaft or it could be the pilot bushing in the crankshaft.  Also, a misalignment of the  transmission and bell housing ( not likely, but possible)

This can be an elusive problem to correct.

I knew it was in the main box, I should have been more clear. I identified it as an r7 to designate which trans I have. Apparently, many years are interchangeable. I may hav found an r10 for a reasonable price, but I might just bite the bullet and buy a recon from George asche. After all, this thing is 77 years old

thanks for your expertise

The R 10 works well and will be easier to service.   The  ratios in the 40's main box with or without overdrive are more pleasing to some drivers as second  is higher.

The gear set will fit in the later box .
