Gman
So I bought a 54 shortbed with I believe a 230 flat head in it that has been sitting since 1982. Cleaned up a few things and filled the carb through the bowl vent and it fired right up and purred. Couldn’t believe it. My problem is, I pulled the water pump off the front of the motor to replace the pump and noticed there was a sheet metal piece inside the larger strangely shaped hole in the front of the block . It was actually in one of the water ports and looked like maybe it was to direct the waters flow or something and it was so rusty it just crumbled. When I touched it. What is this things purpose and do I need it? Where would I ever get another one? Thanks for any help. Gregg
lonejacklarry
You have discovered the water distribution tube. And, yes, the purpose is to circulate coolant to the back of the engine and, yes, you need it. Usually, this item is hard to remove but it must be removed and replaced if it is this condition. They are available from the usual sources and I got mine from Vintage Powerwagons in Fairfield, IA. The usual sources are DCM Classics, Andy Bernbaum Auto Parts, and Roberts Motor Parts. Expect to pay $80, give or take. Look at the pictures at their websites and see what else you have to dig out
